Greg Stumon came to Southern Arkansas University from Plain Dealing, La., High School.  He played football with the Muleriders from 1982 through 1985 and was twice selected First Team Kodak All-America (1984, 1985), and was a First Team National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) All-America, the first SAU football player to ever make First Team All-America twice.  He also was named All-NAIA District 17 in 1985 and All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference in 1984 and 1985.

Stumon had a long professional football career in Canada in the Canadian Football League after his playing days as a Mulerider linebacker.  He finished his career with the Shreveport Pirates, a Canadian Football League franchise, in 1995.

His professional career began with the British Columbia Lions in 1986 where he was on the practice squad and played linebacker in one or two games.  In 1987 and still at British Columbia, he was the CFL Player of the Year and All-Western Conference linebacker.  In his third year with the Lions in 1988, he repeated All-Western Conference linebacker honors but the Lions lost the Grey Cup to Winnipeg by one point.

Stumon was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos in 1989.  Edmonton posted a 16-2 record but lost in the first round in the playoffs.  He signed as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys in 1990 as a linebacker and played the exhibition season before being placed on waivers.  He then signed with the Ottawa Roughriders and was an All-Eastern Conference linebacker.  He played at Ottawa in 1991 and 1992 when he was again selected All-Eastern Conference linebacker.

His third and final year with the Roughriders was in 1993.  He signed with the Shreveport Pirates near his Plain Dealing hometown in 1994 and was a starting linebacker.  In 1995, he broke an arm and was placed on the injured reserve list with the Pirates before retiring.
