Frank Dolan closed his four-year basketball career at Southern Arkansas University having scored 1,099 career points in 71 games for a 15.5 average. Playing from 1956-1960, he ranks 22nd all-time on the Mulerider scoring list.
Dolan, a Crossett native, is best remembered for a fantastic hook shot at the buzzer that defeated arch-rival Arkansas-Monticello in the National Association of Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) District tournament at Pine Bluff in 1960. The Muleriders made an unbelievable comeback in that game, overcoming a late deficit for the win.
Dolan is a member of the Southern Arkansas 500-Point Club with 522 points scored in 1959-60, a 22.7 average. He also is a member of the 300-Point Club with 382 points in 1958-59, for a 19.1 average. Dolan was an All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) selection in his final two seasons (1958-59, 1959-60).
Returning to Crossett after graduation, Dolan remains a leading supporter of his alma mater. He was selected to the Ashley County Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Dolan endowed a scholarship to Crossett High School in memory of his late sister, Donna Gates, an alumnus of SAU. He also added scholarships to honor his sister, Jeannie Carter, to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at Hot Springs (Garland County Community College), a Titus scholarship to the First United Methodist Church in Hamburg in memory of a friend, and the Cliff and Bobbie Horton Scholarship to Crossett High School in memory of his former coach.
After a long career with Georgia Pacific, he retired in 2001. He and his wife, Martha, have a son, Barry, granddaughter Dannielle “Danni,” a step-granddaughter Lynzey, and step-grandson, Levi.
