South Louisiana product and Panola Junior College transfer Dwayne Smith played for two seasons under SAU Sports Hall of Famer Monroe Ingram and put together a dazzling scoring showcase in each of the 1985-86 and 1986-87 campaigns. A two-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) honoree with first team honors in his final season as well as an NAIA All-District 17 nod, Smith garnered NAIA Honorable Mention All-America recognition as a senior in addition to being named the department's 1986-87 Auburn Smith Award winner.

In his junior season, Smith played in all 26 games for Ingram's Muleriders shooting 45% (149-of-333) from the floor and averaging 13.6 points per game as he recorded a 300-point season in 1985-86. His total scoring output ranked seventh in the AIC, while his 85% (56-of-66) shooting clip from the free throw stripe ranked second.

The following year, the one in which Smith would become the program's sixth All-America honoree, saw him finish second in the AIC in scoring at 19 points per game, while ranking third in free throw percentage (.822) and leading the league in free throws attempted (135) and free throws made (111). Smith's 2.6 assists per game landed in the top ten. He finished the campaign with 546 points; the seventh-most in a single season in program history. Aiding his impressive scoring output was a 48.6% shooting clip from beyond-the-arc which led the league in the first year of the three-point shot.

Smith currently ranks 37th on the program's all-time scoring list, but at the time of his departure from Magnolia, he was inside the top twenty as the only two-year player on the list and he is the only two-year player in program history to reach 900 career points. He is one of only seven players in program history to score 500 or more points in a single season and his career 16.7 points per game is the sixth highest mark in program history with the five better marks belonging to fellow hall of famers.

Following his career as a Mulerider, Smith took his scoring prowess overseas and competed professionally for several seasons.
