Hall of Fame
Greg Hampton, like several of his Southern Arkansas teammates in the late 80s and early 90s, put together a sensational career on the track for the Muleriders. A graduate of Hermitage High School, Hampton enrolled at SAU a high school state champion after helping secure the title for the Hermits in the spring of 1989.
Â
The accolades came early and often for the southeast Arkansas native as Hampton, in his four seasons competing for legendary head coach Dan Veach and Southern Arkansas, was a three-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference selection (1990, 1991, 1993) across multiple events and was twice named an NAIA All-American as a member of two highly successful relay teams.
Â
Hampton earned consecutive All-AIC honors in his first two collegiate seasons of 1990 and 1991 in addition to receiving NAIA All-American status as a freshman on SAU's 4x100 relay team and as a sophomore on the 1991 4x400 relay team that finished as NAIA national runner-up. He placed second in the 100M at the '90 AIC Championship with a time of 10.85 and earned a fourth-place result in the 200M at 21.94. The following year, Hampton placed second in the 100M at 10.86 and third in the 200M at 21.95.
Â
In his final year of 1993, Hampton collected four All-AIC accolades as he claimed the top spot on the podium at the league championships in the Long Jump (22' 7") and as a member of the 4x100 relay team (40.74), while finishing third in the 100M (10.85) and fourth in the 200M (22.24). He recorded eight top five event finishes in '93.
Â
That season, Hampton, who had earned the reputation for having one of the best lead-off legs in the country, aided his 4x100 squad in breaking the 27-year-old school record in the event on the sport's biggest stage at the '93 NAIA Outdoor National Championship as Hampton, Marius Allen and fellow SAU Sports Hall of Famers Steven Ogden and Marcus Murphy blazed a 40.38; a record that still stands today.
