Hall of Fame
The late George Henry is a member of the 2003 inaugural Hall of Fame class at Southern Arkansas University as a coach. Henry, who passed away in 1989 a week after his 77th birthday, joined the SAU coaching staff in 1963 as an assistant to track and field coach Raymond (Rip) Powell. When Powell was named the head football coach in 1969, Henry was elevated to head track and field and cross country coach, a position he held until 1978.
His Muleriders won three Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) track and field titles, his first year in 1969, again in 1970 and a third time in 1976. He was voted as the AIC and NAIA District 17 Coach of the year all three times.
One of the highlights of his 43-year coaching career was his election to the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1977. It was a special honor for Henry since his election came from his coaching peers. He was inducted posthumously in the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2003.
