MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The newest king of rushing from the Mulerider Football program is now senior running back
Jariq Scales who has surpassed Mark Johnson's (2008-13) 3,842 career rushing yards. Scales is currently sitting at 3,899 yards on the ground following Saturday's contest versus #16/17 Ouachita Baptist. Scales adds to his resume now as Southern Arkansas Football's all-time leading rusher, while already having the record for single-season rushing yards from his freshman campaign (1,475).
Scales eclipsed Johnson's decade-long record with 100+ less carries than the Mulerider legend and in just over three seasons of ball. The Osceola, Arkansas native, up to this point in his career, has accounted for 15 100-yard games rushing and has still yet to top his own single-game record from his freshman season of 248 yards in a game, which ranks second all-time behind Johnson's 264-yard contest versus McMurry in 2012.
While he has eclipsed Johnson's record and is just 101 rushing yards away from the being the only Mulerider with 4,000 yards on the ground, Scales is on the verge of breaking much more than just this rushing record as the senior is just three trips to the endzone away from being the leader in rushing touchdowns (Mark Johnson | 42) and 81 all-purpose yards away from breaking the Cornell Williams' record of 4,757 all-purpose yards in a career that was set over Williams' career from 1969 to 1972.
Scales and the Muleriders are back in action this coming Saturday in Russellville, Arkansas where Southern Arkansas is set to matchup with Arkansas Tech at 6:00 PM.
