True freshmen shine, 4x100 relays produce season-best efforts

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - True freshman Anaya Ervin broke the program record in the heptathlon with 4,301 total points to place seventh in the event, while fellow true freshman Daymien Smith set a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the 100M with a time of 10.51 to win the event as the pair helped highlight Southern Arkansas' efforts by both programs at the very competitive Carl Kight Invitational hosted by Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. Both the SAU Men and Women totaled 23 top ten finishes.

Ervin recorded personal-best results in the high jump (4' 11.75"), shot put (37' 5"), long jump (16' 6") and javelin (92' 3") events and was the second-highest scoring Division II athlete.

Smith's result stands as a personal-best effort, his first career win in the event and as the fastest mark in the GAC this spring. Smith is currently the lone GAC sprinter to earn a PQT in the 100M event this season. He joins Bryson Johnson, the reigning GAC Male Athlete of the Week, who earned a PQT in the 200M event at last weekend's Little Rock Invitational.
