RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Sophomore sprinter
Travon Johnson was named the Great American Conference Track Athlete of the week after his impressive performance this past weekend at the Carl Knight Invitational, hosted by Stephen F. Austin.
The East Texas native made the most of his return trip to East Texas as he recorded two top ten finishes against a really competitive field that was stacked with Division I opponents. Johnson recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200m dash, as he clocked a 21.56 which is a new personal record.
The sophomore finished tied for 7
th in the 100m dash with a 10.68, which was only .01 behind his personal record. Johnson was able to finish ahead of several DI runners in both races, such as opponents from McNeese State, Northwestern State, Chicago State, Grambling and SFA.
This is the first GAC Track and Field award for the Muleriders this season, as
Kobe Gill last received the honors in March of 2021.
Johnson and the rest of the Muleriders will be back in action this weekend, as they are set to return to SFA to compete in the Earl Miner Invitational.
