MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (11-17, 8-14 GAC) dominated the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (8-20, 6-16 GAC) by a whopping 30 points marking the largest margin of victory this year while also setting a new program record for made three pointers in a single game (20).
The Muleriders came out of the gate swinging early as
Greg Moore Jr. made his first three of the game to give SAU an early 3-0 advantage. The offensive onslaught was on from there as
Jair Horton made a three of his own to put the Muleriders up 6-1 with 16:35 to go before the half. SAU continued to pour on the points opening up an 11-point 14-3 lead with 13:57 to go before the half. The Wonder Boys tried to get back in the game, but the SAU offense continued to roll opening up a 16-point advantage with 7:01 remaining before halftime. A fastbreak three from
Jair Horton ballooned the Muleriders lead out to 14 again as they led Tech, 36-22 with 1:54 to go before halftime. A late three from Arkansas Tech shrunk the lead to 11-points, 36-25 before the half but SAU went into the break with a double-digit lead.
Arkansas Tech came out of the half trying to climb back into the contest cutting the deficit to eight points with 19:13 remaining, but the SAU offense picked up right where they left off opening up a 21-point lead as
Jair Horton sunk a three pointer with 16:05 to go. The Muleriders continued to balloon their lead all the way to 29-points as
Zac Pennington hit a three with 11:12 to go.
Greg Moore Jr. then gave SAU their largest lead of the game and season as he hit a three of his own to give the Muleriders an 85-54 lead (31-points) with just 3:47 remaining in the contest. To cap off the game,
Carter Metz sunk a late three to extend the SAU lead back out to 30-points, as the Muleriders walked out victorious on senior night inside the W.T. Watson Center.
The Muleriders set a record tonight for made three pointers in a single game with a mark of 20 total. The total surpasses the previous mark of 16 which was set against Southeastern Oklahoma State on February 2nd, 2017. Four players also finished the night scoring double-digits.
Jair Horton led the way with 19-points followed by
Greg Moore Jr. with 15,
Zac Pennington with 12, and Junior Williams with 10. Zac Pennignton set a career high tonight with 12-points. Senior
Donavhn Sanford also set several career highs tonight. Sanford finished his time at SAU never missing a free throw and shooting .500 from three-point range as well as .714 from field goal range.
The Muleriders finished the night shooting 50.8% from the field, 52.6% from beyond the arc, and 80% from the free throw line.
The Muleriders season came to a close tonight inside the W.T. Watson Center as they will miss out on the tournament due to a five-team tie. The Muleriders finish their season 11-17 overall and 8-14 in league play. Despite the record the win tonight was a successful way to end their campaign needing to beat the Wonder Boys in order to put themselves in contention for the conference tournament which they will just miss out on.
