MAGNOLIA, Ark. - A historic round helped jumpstart a historic finish. Behind a tournament record for low round by All-GAC first team selection
Caleb Miller coupled with impressive play over the final three holes of round three by junior All-GAC honorable mention
Connor Harrington who went two-under and even efforts from senior
Brendan Little and sophomore
Logan McDonald over the final three, Southern Arkansas slid into a historic finish at the Great American Conference Championship from the par-72, 6,713-yard Arlington Course of the Hot Springs Country Club.
The Muleriders recorded the program's highest finish ever at the tournament championship with a second place finish after entering the final round seven strokes back of a top two placement. Spurring that finish was the program's highest individual finisher ever in Miller who placed second in the 45-golfer field after firing rounds of 73-65-74 (212, -4) with his Monday scorecard standing as both a tournament and program-best effort.
McDonald followed tied for 12th after a 54-hole effort that saw him shave six strokes off of his consecutive 76s to shoot 70 in the final round and finish at 222 (+14).
In his first effort at the GAC Championship, true freshman
Luke Cote placed inside the top 15 as he shot 73-74-76 for a three-round total of 223 (+15).
Harrington produced his lowest round of the tournament on his final trip around the course as he shot 73 on Tuesday to finish at 224 (+16) and tied for 17th as the Muleriders placed four golfers inside the top half of the field.
Southern Arkansas' 170 made pars as a team were the second-most in the tournament field. Miller and Cote were two of the dozen golfers to record at least 35 pars. Little and Harrington followed with 34 each and McDonald made 32.
The Muleriders recorded the third-most birdies with 40. Miller led with ten birdies including five in the second round as well as an eagle on the par-5 ninth. Cote and McDonald both followed with eight with Harrington and Little each recording seven and combining for three over the final three holes and seven in the final round alone.
Additionally, SAU was the only team to finish in the top three of par-3 (+15), par-4 (+24) and par-5 (-13) scoring. Miller led the entire field in par-5 scoring at -9 and was one of two golfers to shoot a tournament-best even on par-3 scoring. Cote led the team on par-4 scoring at +3 and Harrington pursued at +4. Four golfers shot par or better for the tournament on par-5 opportunities.
The Muleriders await their NCAA postseason fate. Southern Arkansas was No. 7 in the Central Region rankings prior to the start of the Great American Conference Tournament. SAU beat two teams ranked ahead of them in the regional poll: No. 3 Harding and No. 6 Southwestern Oklahoma State. A berth would put SAU into a regional for the third time as a team, for the second-consecutive season and it would be the fourth time the Muleriders are represented in NCAA postseason play
