McDonald fourth in historic effort, Muleriders fifth at DBU Classic

Southern Arkansas Men perform well in North Texas

DENTON, Texas – Sophomore Logan McDonald fired an opening round 65 (-7) as part of a 54-hole total of 209 (-7) to finish fourth individually in the 83-golfer field and in the process helped lead Southern Arkansas to a fifth-place finish among the 15-team field at the Dallas Baptist Classic from the par-72, 6,880-yard course of the Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch in Denton, Texas. The Muleriders recorded round scores of 290 (+2), 299 (+11) and 291 (+3) to finish the tournament at 880 (+16); the team's second-best 54-hole effort this season and a top-15 result all-time.

McDonald's round one performance was a historic one as he became just the third player in the program's GolfStat Era (1993-94) to shoot 65 or better joining former Mulerider greats Kade Johnson and Roman Timmerman as the only players to accomplish the feat. The Bryant, Arkansas native's seven-under (-7) in the opening round is a program-best effort vs. par. Johnson and Timmerman are the only other Muleriders to finish at six-under (-6) in a single round.

With his result on the opening 18 holes, McDonald joined Caleb Miller and Connor Harrington to become the first trio of Mulerider teammates to post rounds of 67 or better in the same season after the latter two each notched a round of 67 at the NSU Classic last fall.

McDonald's 65 was tied for the best round by any golfer in the tournament and it marked his second round in the 60s this season after shooting a 69 in a nice opening round performance at the Houston Classic earlier this spring. He recorded rounds of 65-73-71 to run his rounds at par or better total to five. His three-round result of 209 is a career-best result for the Bryant, Arkansas native and tied for the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.

McDonald led the field in par-5 scoring at -9 and was one of ten players that went even or better on par-4 scoring as he shot par. He finished at +2 in par-3 scoring. He totaled 31 pars for the tournament, led SAU in birdies with 14 and cupped an eagle on the par-5 No. 2 in his first round of play.

Miller joined McDonald inside the top 20 as he finished tied for 15th after shooting 70-78-70 for a three-round total of 218; his second-best 54-hole effort this season. The pair of 70s mark the seventh and eighth rounds this season that the junior has shot par or better. Miller shot +3 on par-3 and par-4 scoring and posted the team's second-best par-5 effort at -4. He totaled 37 pars and made eight birdies.

Harrington posted rounds of 78-74-77 to finish at 229; his fourth 54-hole tournament this season below 230. His second round 74 marks the 13th round this season that the Magnolia native has shot better than 75. Harrington finished at +3 in par-4 scoring and even in par-5 scoring. He made par 35 times to go along with five birdies.

Brendan Little posted a trio of sub-80 rounds with a tournament-best 74 in Monday's second round. The 73 (+1) is a single stroke back of his best effort this season and his three-round total of 230 over 54 holes is a season-best effort. Little's +2 on par-3 scoring led the team and was tied for eighth among the tournament field. He finished at +2 in par-5 scoring and matched Miller's effort in pars made with 37. Little recorded four birdies.

Alex Gerrard shot a 78 in his first round of action and then dropped nine strokes off of his second-round score to finish with a career-best round of 73 (+1) and a career-best three-round total of 233. Gerrard went +4 in both par-4 and par-5 scoring for the tournament, made 28 pars and seven birdies.

As a team, the Muleriders finished at +20 in par-4 scoring which tied for the third-best effort on such holes over the three-round tournament. In par-5 scoring, SAU shot -7 which landed inside the top third of the field. Southern Arkansas collected the third-most pars in the tournament with 169 and added 38 birdies, while being one of five teams to record an eagle which gives head coach Neriah Brown's squad nine for the season; one back of tying the single-season program record. SAU now has 203 birdies on the season which is currently the eighth-most in a single season.

Southern Arkansas entered the tournament with a team average score of 301.18 at 13.88 vs. par in its 17 previous rounds this season. The Muleriders recorded three scores under their season average.

The Muleriders return to action in two weeks for the Natural State Classic hosted by Harding from the Cypress Creek Golf Club in Cabot, Arkansas. The event will be the squad's final regular season tournament in advance of the 2023 Great American Conference Championship. Live scoring will be made available at www.MuleriderAthletics.com.
