‘Riders busy: Seven programs in action over next five days

Two programs close out their respective regular seasons, while five others begin final stretch before league tournaments

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Seven Mulerider Athletics programs are set for action this weekend and through the first of next week as April moves on. Southern Arkansas Men's and Women's Tennis along with Mulerider Baseball are set for competition in Magnolia, while Mulerider Men's and Women's Track & Field, Southern Arkansas Softball and SAU Men's Golf takes the show on the road. Friday, April 14
#43 Mulerider Men's Tennis vs. Texas A&M-Texarkana | 2 p.m.
*Southern Arkansas remains ranked inside the ITA Top 50 and is led by Sander Jans who holds the No. 12 singles ranking and Jans and Ben Schneider who are currently ranked No. 26 in doubles.
*The Muleriders meet TAMUT on the court for the first time.
*Southern Arkansas looks for its eighth win of the season and to even its home record at 4-4.
*Ole Valkyser leads SAU with ten singles wins and Jans, Tim Fischer and Mathieu Wierniezky all follow with nine.
*Valkyser and Gabriel Breitenmoser own seven doubles victories to lead the team.
 
Mulerider Women's Tennis vs. Texas A&M-Texarkana | 2 p.m.
*Lena Milosevic is the reigning GAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week after helping SAU win all three of its GAC matches during that span. SAU added another league victory with a Wednesday win over Southeastern Oklahoma State.
*The Muleriders meet TAMUT on the court for the first time.
*The Muleriders look for their fifth straight win and look to even up their overall record at 12-12.
*Milosevic leads the team in singles wins with 17, while Annika Berrendorf follows with 16 singles victories this spring.
*The duo has won 11 times in doubles play this season, while the pairing of Greta Wallin and Kalley Smith have won 10 times.
 
(RV) Mulerider Softball at Southwestern Oklahoma State | 2 p.m. (DH)
*Southern Arkansas is receiving votes in the NFCA DII Top 25 Coaches Poll for the second-straight week and has appeared in every ranking by the organization this season.
*The Muleriders are 32-9 all-time against SWOSU, but just 10-8 against the Bulldogs in Weatherford.
*SWOSU enters the weekend at 10-33 overall with a 5-19 mark in GAC play.
*SAU is tied atop the GAC in batting average at .309 and ranks fourth in team ERA at 2.93. SWOSU is hitting a league-low .232 with the third-highest team ERA in the GAC at 5.12.
*Ariana Rolle (.376), Jaxynn Dyson (.365) and Alyssa Miller (.353) all rank in the top 11 in the GAC in average with Rolle ranking sixth.
*Dyson carries the team's highest slugging percentage of .692 which ranks second in the GAC. She leads the conference in on-base percentage at .492.
*Miller's 47 hits are tied for the third-most in the league, while Kamryn Moctezuma ranks sixth in RBI with 32.
*Sydney Ward's 107 strikeouts are the third-most in the GAC as are her 15 wins this spring. Bailey Thornhill ranks sixth in wins with ten and is tied for fifth in strikeouts with 83.
 
#11/6 Mulerider Baseball vs. Southwestern Oklahoma State | 3 p.m. (DH)
*The Muleriders have nestled into the top 10 in a pair of polls. SAU is No. 11 in the NCBWA Top 25 and is up to No. 6 in the CBN Top 30.
*Since first meeting as GAC opponents in 2012, SAU is 22-12 against the Bulldogs, but 9-6 against SWOSU in Magnolia.
*SWOSU enters the weekend at 20-19 overall with an 11-13 mark in GAC play.
*The Muleriders are hitting .299 as a team with a staff ERA of 4.83; the third-best in the GAC. SWOSU owns a league-leading average of .331 with the third-highest team ERA in the GAC at 7.55.
*Riley Orr's .383 average ranks tenth in the GAC, while his .507 on-base percentage ranks sixth. Both marks are team highs. Orr leads the team in steals with 11, while Conner Allen and Chris Lyles both follow with ten.
*Chris Sutton ranks in GAC top ten in runs scored with 42.
*Brandon Nicoll's 49 RBI rank fourth in the conference as do Brett McGee's 11 home runs. McGee became SAU and the GAC's all-time HR leader this spring. McGee ranks third in walks with 30 and third in hit-by-pitch with 15.
*Mikel Howell (3.44) and Jeremy Adorno (3.53) rank second and third in the GAC in ERA. Adorno's opponent BA of .217 is the league's best as are his 66.1 innings pitched. His 84 strikeouts are the second-most and he is tied for the league lead in wins with six.
*Howell and Wyatt Marr have each fanned 49 batters which makes SAU one of only two teams with multiple pitchers ranked inside the top 12 in strikeouts and the only team with its entire weekend rotation ranked.  
*Isaiah Haynes leads the league in saves with nine.
 
Mulerider Men's Track & Field at SFA Carl Kight Invitational | 9 a.m.
*Multi-athletes Connor White and Jeremy Jackson finish up action in the Decathlon starting at 9 a.m.
*White ranks fourth (5,057) and Jackson sixth (4,575) in Decathlon performance in the GAC this spring.
*The Javelin, Pole Vault and Long Jump will take place as well as the Distance Carnival.
*Korbin McAuliffe (153' 10") and Joseph Boyd (14' 5.25") rank fifth in the GAC in the javelin and pole vault, respectively.
*Keith Smith holds the fifth-best result in the GAC in the long jump at 45' 9.25".
 
Mulerider Women's Track & Field at SFA Carl Kight Invitational | 11 a.m.
*Multi-athletes Anaya Ervin and Ariana Morris finish up action in the Heptathlon starting at 9 a.m.
*Ervin ranks fifth (3,722) and Morris sixth (2,579) in Heptathlon performance in the GAC this spring.
*The Javelin, Pole Vault and Long Jump will take place as well as the Distance Carnival.
*Diamond Brunn (18' 2.25") and Breyonna Steward (17' 5.25") rank fourth and seventh, respectively among GAC long jumpers this spring.
 
Saturday, April 15
Mulerider Men's Track & Field at SFA Carl Kight Invitational | 9:30 a.m.
*Reigning GAC Track Athlete of the Week Bryson Johnson will test the waters against a primarily DI field in Nacogdoches. Johnson will look to improve on his DII provisional qualifying time of 21.20 in the 200M.
*The Hammer, Discus, Triple Jump and High Jump will be contested with running beginning at 12:30 p.m.
*Landon Way owns the fastest 100M (10.61) time in the GAC entering the weekend.
*The 4x100 relay of Bryson Johnson, Travon Johnson, Daymien Smith and Way hold the top time (41.09) in the GAC.
*Carter Cheek ranks second in the GAC in the 110H with a time of 14.58.
*Derrick Onyeador's 6' 2" high mark this season ranks fifth in the GAC.
*Ja'Kamron Zackery ranks in the top three in the GAC in the shot put (49' 7"), discus (162') and hammer (163' 8").
 
Mulerider Women's Track & Field at SFA Carl Kight Invitational | 9:30 a.m.
*Reigning GAC Track Athlete of the Week Jordan Collins will test the waters against a primarily DI field in Nacogdoches. She holds the top time in the 400M (57.65) and ranks third in the GAC in the 200M (25.21).
*The Hammer, Discus, Triple Jump and High Jump will be contested with running beginning at 12:30 p.m.
*Kamrin Hooks is ranked in the top four in the GAC in the 100M (12.27), 200M (25.10) and 400M (58.74).
*Kailyn Thomas holds the top hammer mark in the GAC at 167' 10". Thomas also ranks second in the shot put (42' 7.5") and is fourth in the discus (134' 4")
*Irieyanna Wilson carries the top shot put mark in the league this spring at 43' 4.5". She ranks second in the hammer at 155' 6".
*Steward (36' 11.5") and Brunn (36' 9.75") rank third and fifth, respectively in the triple jump.
*Alexis Matlock ranks second in the GAC in the high jump (5' 4.25").
 
#43 Mulerider Men's Tennis vs. #38 Washburn | 11 a.m.
*The Muleriders meet Washburn for the fifth time since 2018-19. SAU holds a 3-1 mark against the Ichabods.
*It will be the first meeting in Magnolia and it will mark the fifth different state that the two teams have contested a match in.
*Senior Sander Jans will be honored prior to the start of the match as he will play his final regular season home match in Magnolia.
 
Mulerider Women's Tennis vs. #26 Washburn | 11 a.m.
*The Muleriders battle Washburn for the fourth time since 2018-19 and will be looking for their first win against the Ichabods.
*It will be the first matchup in Magnolia after the two teams have played matches in Texas, Kansas and Missouri.
*Seniors Lena Milosevic and Kalley Smith will be honored prior to the start of the match as both will be playing their final regular season home match at the Live Oak Tennis Courts.

Monday, April 17
Mulerider Men's Golf at Natural State Classic | All Day
*The Muleriders are coming off of their second-best three-round effort of the season after shooting 880 at the DBU Men's Classic.
*Logan McDonald matched the program record for low round with a round one 65 in the tournament to join teammates Caleb Miller and Connor Harrington as the only Mulerider Golf trio to shoot 67 or better in the same season.
*Miller leads the team in scoring average at 73.6 and owns seven rounds at par or better this season.
*McDonald and Harrington follow Miller's 82.3% finish percentage with marks north of 61%.
*The trio has combined for 14 rounds at par or better this season of which four have been in the 60s.
 
Tuesday, April 18
Mulerider Men's Golf at Natural State Classic | All Day
 
#43 Mulerider Men's Tennis at MIAA-GAC Tournament | TBD
 
#11/6 Mulerider Baseball vs. Mississippi College | 3 p.m.
*It will be the 13th meeting between the two clubs since 1996. SAU holds a 9-3 series record and is 6-1 at home.
*On February 28 in Clinton, the Choctaws snapped a six-game losing streak to the Muleriders winning 16-3 in seven innings.
*MC enters the weekend 13-25 overall.
 
(RV) Mulerider Softball vs. Delta State | 3 p.m. (DH)
*Since first meeting the Statesmen in Magnolia in 1999, the Muleriders are 31-41 all-time against DSU with a 13-16 record at home.
*The Muleriders have won five straight in the series and six of the past seven.
*In the five-consecutive victories, SAU is averaging 13 runs per game and allowing only 2.4 runs per game.
