MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (23-20, 16-14 GAC) defeated the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Savage Storm (26-18, 17-13 GAC) by a final score of 12-7 in game three of the series.
Southeastern jumped out to an early lead plating three runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead, 3-0. In the bottom of the first,
David Chandler put the Muleriders on the board with a sacrifice fly out to center field as
Preston Smith scored, 3-1. Despite more traffic on the base paths, the Muleriders only scratched one run across as the teams headed into the second. The Savage Storm extended their lead in the top of the second inning plating one run to take a 4-1 lead, but
Carter Gaston shut them down to send SAU to the plate in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back singles from
Michael Herndon and
Wyatt Fielding plated one run each as SAU scratched two runs across to cut the deficit to one run, 4-3.
A scoreless top of the third, SAU take the lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Ayden Slott was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score
Tate Elliott as SAU tied the game at 4-4.
David Chandler recached on an error by the third baseman three hitters later but scored
Jordan Owns and
Jacob Lang thanks to some heads-up base running from Lang to give SAU their first lead of the game after three complete innings, 6-4. Another scoreless top of the fourth for Gaston on the mound saw
Preston Smith break the game wide open as he tripled to dead center field with the bases loaded as all three runs scored, 9-4. The triple by Smith was his eighth of the year. A mark that ties him for first in Division II and solo first in Division I.
David Chandler stepped to the plate after a Southeastern pitching change and homered to left field as SAU took complete control of the game going up 11-4 after four complete.
Carter Gaston continued to shut the Savage Storm offense out on the mound as SAU tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Christian Gutierrez scampered home and
Jordan Owns reached on an error to put SAU up 12-4. After the fifth inning the SAU bats cooled off but the Savage Storm plated one run in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to make the score 12-7. Despite pressure on the base paths in the top of the ninth inning,
Caleb Sollars entered the game and put the Savage Storm out of the contest and the Muleriders walked away 12-7 winners.
