Hammond tabbed GAC Newcomer of the Year, Black named GAC Honorable Mention

Southern Arkansas newcomers among league’s best; Logan Bradley, Brock Schreiner honored for academic achievement

SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Great American Conference announced its yearly award winners at a special banquet from inside FireLake Arena on Wednesday night in Shawnee. Among the men's basketball honorees was Southern Arkansas standout junior guard Gregory Hammond Jr., who was named GAC Newcomer of the Year and an All-GAC first team selection, and senior forward LaTreavin Black, who received All-GAC honorable mention. Senior Logan Bradley and graduate Brock Schreiner were named GAC Distinguished Scholar Athletes for their achievement in the classroom.

Hammond Jr., in his first year with the Muleriders after transferring in from UMass Lowell, was a welcomed addition to the Southern Arkansas roster and his impact was immediate. The New Orleans, Louisiana native played in all 28 regular season games with 27 starts at 26.1 minutes per game. He delivered a team-leading 12.7 points per game (18th GAC) behind an overall shooting clip of 45.4% (127-280) and a three-point success rate of 40.5% (51-126) which ranks 10th in the GAC entering the tournament. His 1.8 made threes per game rank as a top 20 mark in the league.

Hammond currently has the third-most rebounds on the team with 171 at 6.1 per game (9th GAC). He has recorded 36 assists and 23 steals and leads the team in shot denials with 23 (10th GAC). Additionally, the Big Easy product has accounted for three double-double efforts and delivered twenty games in double-figure scoring with six games at 20+ points. His season-high scoring output came at home against Harding as he scored 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting with five rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

The city of Shreveport, Louisiana has been good to the Muleriders. LaTreavin Black is the next example of that. The Port City native has put together an impressive final collegiate season in his only year in Magnolia. Black's 11.2 points per game trail only Hammond's team-leading scoring average. The physical forward has scored in double figures 21 times and delivered six double-double performances behind a team-leading 7.6 rebounds per game which is the second-best board-grabbing average in the GAC.

A senior transfer from USC Aiken, Black is one of four Muleriders to start all 28 regular season games for Southern Arkansas and he did so at a team-leading 28.3 minutes per game. He leads the team in shots made (134), field goal percentage (.563 - 10th GAC), rebounds (212 - 2nd GAC) and steals (43 - T6th GAC) in addition to collecting the third-most assists (45) and second-most blocks (14 - 15th GAC).

Like Black, Schreiner's only season in Magnolia has been a memorable one. The graduate transfer guard out of Cameron University, Schreiner has brought a little bit of it all to the table in head coach Logan Quinn's first season. The Choctaw, Oklahoma native leads the team in assists (82) and along with backcourt mate Jerry Carraway Jr. the duo is the first pair to each record 75 or more assists since the 2017-18 season. His 2.9 assists per game ranks tenth in the GAC and his 1.6 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks fifth. His ability to distribute the basketball helped Southern Arkansas boast the second-highest scoring offense in the GAC in the regular season at 77.3 ppg

Schreiner averaged 5.8 ppg behind a 40.4% shooting clip which included a 30.2% mark from three-point range. He finished the regular season as a 74.5% shooter at the charity stripe which ranks third on the team among players with at least 40 attempts. Schreiner scored in double figures four times, grabbed five or more rebounds on seven occasions and collected two or more steals eight times.

A graduate transfer from Cameron University, Schreiner carries a 3.76 GPA following his first semester in Magnolia. In mid-February, he was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.

Bradley, a Natural State prep standout at Booneville High School, played 30 minutes across six games as a senior. He shot 45.5% with five makes, including two from downtown and he grabbed four rebounds, one assist and a steal.

Bradley currently carries a 3.7 GPA as he pursues a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology.
