Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – While the rain is not supposed to start until tomorrow in our region, it was raining three's tonight inside Steelman Field House in Monticello as the Southern Arkansas University women's basketball team took down Arkansas-Monticello 87-67 behind 14 made three pointers. The biggest three of the night came late in the first quarter as
Kylie Warren became the new career leader for made three pointers in a career with 128.
After trailing to UAM to start the game (19-16), it was Warren's first quarter three with 50 seconds remaining in the first quarter that helped propel the Muleriders on a large run as they would never look back.
SAU used a 23-2 run (1
st 00:52-3:57 2nd) to take a 39-21 lead after a slow start. The SAU defense held the weevils to 12 points in the second quarter and took a 47-31 lead into the break. The Muleriders came out hot in the second half as they used a 10-4 run to start the quarter on their way to 28 third quarter points. Despite being outscored in the final quarter, SAU was still able to hold UAM under 20 points (19) in which they did each quarter on their way to the 87-67 victory.
SAU tied the program record for threes in a game with 14, which has now been done three times this season.
Jessica Jones led the Muleriders with 18 points on a career high six made three pointers on 10 attempts for 60 percent. Warren followed Jones with a 50 percent clip from deep as she connected on 3-of-6 and finished with 11 points. Both
Camryn Fennell and
Mychala Linzy also hit two three pointers.
Diamond Morris also finished with 11 points, while
Lillie Moore totaled 10 points. Young finished with a 75 percent mark from the floor (3-of-4) for nine points, while Moore shot 62.5 percent (5-of-8).
Warren and
Kenzie Ezekiel led SAU with six rebounds, while Moore pulled down five boards.
Ariana Guinn led the Muleriders with four assists.
The Muleriders will have one more road game on Thursday evening as they are set to take on Ouachita Baptist. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
