Weatherford, Okla. – The SAU Women's Basketball team enters a critical weekend that could stand to define their final placement in the GAC Standings come the end of the season, one month from today on February 29
th.
The Muleriders, coming off home wins against Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene this past weekend, currently sit at 13-5 overall and 7-5 in GAC play. They are currently seventh in the GAC Standings but only sit a game back of a five-way tie for second place.
This weekend, the Muleriders make their second trip to the Sooner State this season, traveling to Weatherford on Thursday to take on the other 7-5 team in the GAC, Southwestern Oklahoma State. The Bulldogs have lost three on the bounce while the Muleriders are 0-7 all-time in Weatherford.
When these two teams met back on January 4
th inside the W. T. Watson Center, the Muleriders claimed victory over the then 21
st-ranked Bulldogs 67-61. The Muleriders held the Bulldogs to only 30.9 percent shooting on the night and 29 percent from three-point range.
Freshman Makyra Tramble led the Bulldogs offense with 19 points and six rebounds; however, the Muleriders were able to force the freshman into committing seven of the Bulldogs' 18 turnovers on the night.
The Muleriders, who outrebounded the Bulldogs 51-37, had three players record eight or more rebounds –
Doriana Brown led the team with nine while
Alyssa Crase and
Kisi Young grabbed eight each.
Kylie Warren went 3-4 from deep as the Muleriders went 6-14 from deep, good for 42.9 percent, and shot 40.4 percent from the field. Warren finished with 13 points in that contest.
Brown, in addition to her nine rebounds, scored 12 points on 4-8 shooting from the field, as well as going 4-6 from the charity stripe. The junior also recorded two blocks and two steals in 23 minutes off the bench.
On Saturday, the Muleriders will travel up to Alva to take on ninth-place Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Rangers are 9-9 on the season and 5-7 in conference play. They have not beaten a GAC team in the top eight this season, save for their January 2
nd win over the Muleriders.
The Muleriders, who led after the first quarter 17-13 against the Rangers, went 5-34 from the field, including 0-17 from deep in the second and third quarters as the lost 77-49, their worst loss of the season.
The Rangers had four players score in double-digits, as they were able to break the Muleriders' full-court pressure, while the Muleriders were unable to get anyone to score ten points, with
Diamond Morris leading the offense with nine points.
The Rangers are 5-3 at home this season, including winning their past two over Oklahoma Baptist and Ouachita. The Muleriders are 4-3 on the road this season, with their last road win coming on January 9
th in Ada against East Central.
Following this weekend trip, the Muleriders will host Henderson State next Thursday before going to Russellville to take on Arkansas Tech on Saturday.
