Durant, Okla. -Â The SAU Women's Basketball team makes the trip up to Oklahoma for the final time this season and look to play spolier as they take on a pair of Sooner State schools who are looking to position themselves better in the GAC Tournament.Â
First, the Muleriders travel up to Durant to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Savage Storm are 11-11 on the season and 9-9 in conference play; they currently sit in sixth in the conference and can clinch a tournament spot with a win Thursday and an Oklahoma Baptist loss. The Savage Storm are in the midst of a four-game losing streak, losing to Oklahoma Baptist, Southern Nazarene, East Central and Northwestern Oklahoma State. The last time the Muleriders played the Savage Storm, the Savage Storm left Magnolia with a 14-point victory, with Katie Webb leading the scoring with a season-high 36 points, and
Jerica Bell led the Muleriders in scoring with 13 points. For the season, the Savage Storm rank in the top five in the GAC in scoring offense and scoring defense. The Savage Storm offense is an efficient one, with top-five rankings in free-throw percentage and field goal percentage, as well as being the top three-point shooting percentage team in the conference. On the other side, they rank in the top five in field goal percentage defense and three-point percentage defense. Additionally, Webb leads the GAC in scoring with 20.5 points per game; teammate Katie Branam leads the conference in three-point shooting percentage at 44.8 percent, and Briley Moon ranks fifth with 41.5 percent. After their matchup with the Muleriders, the Savage Storm will host Arkansas-Monticello in their final home game of the season.Â
The Muleriders take part in their final road game of the season on Saturday in Ada to take on East Central. The Tigers are 17-7 on the season and 12-6 in the conference. They currently sit in third place, one game back of the two-seed in the GAC and have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament. The last time the Muleriders and the Tigers met, the Tigers left the W. T. Watson Center with a 76-55 victory, with Stefany Lourenco leading the scoring with 17 points, including 3-6 shooting from three-point range. The Tigers boast the second-best scoring defense in the conference, only conceding 62 points per game. The Tigers are the top team from the free-throw line, shooting 75.6 percent. The Tigers are second from behind the arc, making it at a 36 percent clip. Lakin Preisner leads the team in scoring at 13.7 points per game, good enough for 12th in the conference. Preisner also ranks second in rebounding with 8.3 boards per game, and leads the conference from the charity stripe at 93.3 percent.Â
The Muleriders come into this weekend on a nine-game losing streak; they are 2-22 on the season and 1-17 in the conference, and have been eliminated from postseason contention. The Muleriders are led in scoring by
Ariana Guinn. The freshman guard scores 10.7 points per game, and leads the team in steals (22), free-throw attempts (93), free-throw makes (74) and free-throw percentage (79.6 percent).
Alyssa Crase leads the team in rebounding at 5.1 boards per game, and
Brette Wacha leads the team in assists (37) and three-pointers made (32).Â
After this weekend, the Muleriders close out their season at home against Southern Nazarene and Oklahoma Baptist.Â
