ENID, Okla. – Senior golfer
Kirk Peterson and the rest of the Southern Arkansas men's golf team ended their fall seasons on a high note as Peterson tied for the individual title while SAU ran away with the team title by 27 strokes at the Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) Invitational, which was held at the par-71, 6,574-yard Meadowlake Golf Course in Enid, Okla. over the last two days.
Peterson, who tied for first-place individually with University of the Southwest's Caleb Conn, continued his run of good golf at the NWOSU Invitational as he finished the two-round tournament shooting -1 (141). In the opening round on Sunday, Peterson shot a +2 (73), but on Monday, Peterson would post the first round in the 60s for any Mulerider golfer this fall as he shot a -3 (68).
While Peterson's tournament was strong, the rest of the Muleriders' lineup was strong as well as the team posted a pair of team scores in the 200s for the first time this fall.
On Sunday, the Muleriders positioned themselves atop the team leaderboard with an opening round score of 291. In that opening round,
George Adams and
Evan Buchalski would each lead the team with round of +1 (72). Peterson's 73 in round one was next followed by
Jacob Etherington and
Luke Williams each carding a +3 (74) to give SAU a team score of 291.
The Muleriders would add a stroke in the second round, but Peterson's improvement and overall consistency of the lineup kept the Muleriders well ahead of the rest of the field.
As a matter of fact, by tournament's end, the Muleriders' entire lineup posted top-10 finishes with four of the five finishing in the top-five.
Buchalski, who was four strokes back of Peterson, would finish third overall while Adams and Williams tied one another for fifth and Etherington registered a seventh-place finish.
The Muleriders will now prepare for the championship segment of their season as they will return to competition in the spring semester.
