BULLARD, Texas - The Mulerider and Lady Mulerider cross country teams traveled to Bullard, Texas on Friday, March 7 to compete in the Marc Randle Classic, hosted by the University of Texas at Tyler. Though this particular meet was non-scoring, head cross country coach
Tim Servis entered his runners in only mid-distance and long-distance events to gauge their conditioning in the off-season.
The women's 5000m (12.5 lap) race was first. Junior
Carli Langley took first place in this race, shattering the school record (18:34, which she set in 2013) by running an 18:19. Next for the Lady Muleriders was
Michelle Beavers, placing 4th with a time of 20:36, followed by freshman
Mattie Whitehead, placing sixth with a time of 21:10. Senior
Cheyenne Meyer took 10th place with a 22:28, sophomore
Leah Jamison was 11th with a time of 22:32 and freshman Liz Ivey rounded out the team in 12th place with a 22:48.
"I'm very proud of Carli for breaking the school record," Servis said. "I knew she would do it; I just didn't know by how much. Mattie also shocked me in the race, running 50 seconds faster than her previous cross country personal record. The ladies made a good showing in this race."
In the men's 5000m race, the first Mulerider to cross the line was freshman
Jose Guevara with a time of 16:18, good enough for a fourth place finish. He was followed by sophomore
Joel Pogue, who finished in 7th place with a 16:45. Sophomore
Garrett Wright and junior
Daniel Pevril finished simultaneously at 16:53. Junior
Sam Grinnan and freshman
Loghin Livingston were non-scoring runners in this race.
The 800m race was the next to feature SAU. In the second heat, Whitehead recorded a 2:55 and a 7th place finish, followed by 8th place Jamison with a 3:10. Though neither has ever raced 800m before, Servis believes placing them in the race was good experience and was a nice additional speed workout.
In the men's 800m race, freshman
Chris Wallace posted a 2:01 and a 4th place finish, followed by junior
Kirby Shepherd with a 2:05 and a 7th place finish.
Finally, the Lady Muleriders competed in the 1500m (3.75 lap) race – the last mid-distance event of the day. Langley finished 2nd with a 5:01, followed by freshman
Virginia Ney in 3rd with a 5:09. Beavers took 5th place with a 5:37.
In the men's 1500m race, Shepherd took 4th with a 4:12, followed by Guevara in 6th with a 4:15 and Wallace in 8th with a 4:17. Pogue took 10th with a 4:24 and Grinnan was 11th with a 4:31.
Servis admitted after the meet that his team had a lot of work to do.
"The training during the off-season is what will make or break a team," Servis explained. "We have a lot of improvements we have to make as a team if we want to do well in the next meet. Putting in mileage, monitoring diet, and supplementary workouts – all three are so important. And of course, getting in the miles over spring break."
Servis and his team will compete again on Friday, April 4 at the Stephen F. Austin State University Distance Carnival in Nacogdoches, Texas.
