Second half surge lifts Lady Muleriders past Rangers, 69-63

Box Score

ALVA, Okla. – Trailing by 15 points with 16:36 left in the second half, the Southern Arkansas women's basketball team ripped off a 24-0 run over the next 8:43 of the game to take a nine-point lead with 7:53 remaining. The Lady Muleriders would go on to hold that lead and pick up a 69-63 road win against Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon.

The 24-point monster run was a part of an entire second half surge that saw the Lady Muleriders (10-9, 6-7 GAC) out-score the Rangers (5-13, 5-7 GAC) 44-25. In that second half, the Lady Muleriders improved their shooting from 32% (8-of-25) in the first half to an even 50% (14-of-28) while the Rangers dropped from 39% (15-of-39) shooting in the first half to 30% (8-of-27).

A couple of statistical changes from the first half to the second went in favor of the Lady Muleriders, helping them embark on their tremendous comeback.

The first of those stats came in the points in the paint category. In the first half, SAU only had six points in the paint while NWOSU had 20. In the second half, the roles reversed as the Lady Muleriders totaled 20 points in the paint compared the Rangers' eight.

The second significant stat difference was turnovers and subsequent points off of turnovers. In the first half, the Lady Muleriders turned the ball over 10 times which translated into 14 points on the other end of the court. Conversely, the Rangers only turned the ball over three times in the first half which resulted in just three points for the Lady Muleriders.

In the second half, the Lady Muleriders turned the ball over 10 more times, but the Rangers were only able to turn that into five points on their end. On the other side of the floor, the Lady Muleriders were able to score 15 points off of 14 Ranger turnovers in the second half.

Four players ended in double figures for the Lady Muleriders with Chanel Miller and Barvion Wyatt leading the way with 14 points each. Mariam Ridgwell and Aarika Reyna would follow with 11 points each. Wyatt also narrowly missed out on a double-double as she pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Ridgwell was next in that category with eight boards.

The Lady Muleriders will now prepare for another Oklahoma swing next week as they travel to Ada, Okla. and Durant, Okla. to take on East Central and Southeastern Oklahoma. The first of those games is a Thursday night meeting with East Central on February 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
