Second-half surge by Arkansas Tech sinks Muleriders, 14-13

Box Score
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – 14 second- half points by Arkansas Tech erased a 13-0 halftime lead by Southern Arkansas and proved to be the difference as 14-13 would be the final score in favor of Arkansas Tech on Saturday night at Thone Stadium.

The Muleriders (3-3, 3-3 GAC) scored the game's first points when Tyler Sykora hooked up with Chris Terry from 29 yards out, but the extra point would hit the right upright making the score 6-0 with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter. SAU would extend their lead to 13-0 with 11:01 left in the second quarter as Mark Johnson capped off a 10-play 86-yard drive with a 6 yard touchdown rush.

That scoring drive, which lasted 5:11, would be the Muleriders longest drive of the game. From there they would struggle to move the ball against the Wonder Boys' (3-3, 3-2 GAC) defense. On their last two possessions of the first half, SAU managed just 33 yards on nine plays and were forced to punt each time. Despite that, the Mulerider defense was also up to the task as they forced four punts, a missed field goal attempt and an interception to hold Arkansas Tech scoreless through the first half.

The score would remain 13-0 in favor of Southern Arkansas until the 3:48 mark of the third quarter when  Arkansas Tech connected on an 86-yard touchdown pass for their first points of the game. With 10:15 left in the fourth quarter, Arkansas Tech grabbed their lone lead of the game, 14-13, as quarterback Luke Halpin connected with Jerry Anderson from 31 yards out.

After that go-ahead touchdown, Arkansas Tech would possess the ball three more times, but the SAU defense stood tall on those drives limiting the Wonder boy offense to 25 yards on 10 plays  and forcing a punt on each of those drives. Unfortunately, the Mulerider offense was unable to capitalize following those punts as they totaled 16 yards on 12 plays.

Their final attempt at a game-winning drive came with 1:30 left. After a penalty, two incomplete passes and a five-yard rush, the Muleriders were faced with a 4th and 10 game on the line situation. On that play, Sykora hit Jack Brown by the left sideline, but it was ruled by the official that Brown did not secure the catch as he went out of bounds.  With no timeouts left for Southern Arkansas, Arkansas Tech took a couple of knees to end the game.

For the game, Sykora would go 19-for-46, 318 yards and one touchdown. His one touchdown would go to Terry who had six catches for 174 yards. Defensively, the Muleriders were led by Tate Mustin as he had 10 total tackles (3 solo, 7 assisted). Bruce Guillory would lead the team with tackles for loss, 2.5 and sacs, 2.0. James Thurston forced the Muleriders lone turnover as he came away with an interception.

Southern Arkansas will remain on the road for their next game as they will travel to Bethany, Okla. to take on Southern Nazarene. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19.
