MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Tied at 66-all in overtime, Southern Arkansas'
Daviel Clements drained a three-pointer from the corner with 17 seconds remaining in the extra period to propel the Muleriders to a 69-66 win over visiting Southwestern Oklahoma State University on Thursday night in the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.
The overtime win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Muleriders (7-11, 3-9 GAC) and keeps them in contention for a possible berth into the upcoming Great American Conference Basketball Tournament.
SAU fell behind early in the first half, but a 42% (10-of-24) shooting performance in the opening period helped the Muleriders eventually capture a lead that they would take with them into the locker room.
Leading by seven points at halftime, 34-27, the Muleriders saw their lead dwindle to as little as two points early in the second half. Despite the early push by the Bulldogs (7-11. 6-6 GAC), the Muleriders would not relinquish the lead until the 6:09 mark of the second half as SWOSU's Rod Camphor drained a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs their first lead since early in the first half.
From there until the end of regulation, the game would be tight as the lead changed hands on five occasions. A made layup by SWOSU's Ryan Donahoe with just over one second remaining tied the game up at 61-all. The Muleriders'
Chris Davis would have enough time to launch the potential game-winner as time expired, but his attempt was wide left as it crashed off the backboard, sending the game into overtime.
In the overtime period, the Muleriders quickly jumped out to a five-point advantage with a 5-0 run, but the Bulldogs answered with their own 5-0 run to knot the game up at 66-all with under 1:30 remaining.
After the teams traded missed shots over the next minute of play, Clements provided the game's heroics as he buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 17 seconds remaining to ignite the crowd at the W.T. Watson Center. The Bulldogs would get off the game-tying three-pointer, but it would draw iron, giving the Muleriders the thrilling overtime win.
Four Muleriders scored in double figures with three doing so coming off the bench. Davis led the team with 18 points while Clements was behind him with 14 points, and
Darrin Johnson and
Duke Reed each scored 12 points. Clements would earn a double-double as he pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Muleriders will be back in action at home on Saturday, February 2nd as they will play host to Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for approximately 4:00 p.m.
