Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas wrapped up its final non-conference test of the season with an 86-56 win over Champion Baptist Thursday at the W.T. Watson Athletic Center.
The Muleriders (6-6) snapped a three-game skid and made it their second win on the year over the Tigers (4-17), also picking up a 100-66 decision in their season-opener in Hot Springs.
SAU had five players score in double-figures, led by junior guard
Darrin Johnson's (Chicago, Ill.) 19 points.
Champion Baptist forward Brandon Likins lit up the scoreboard with 35 points and pulled down nine rebounds in playing all 40 minutes.
Junior forwards
Duke Reed (Houston, Texas) and
Tevin Worthy (Little Rock) posted double-doubles for Southern Arkansas, with Reed getting 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Worthy recording 12 points and 10 boards. Reed also had five assists and five steals. Senior guard
Rodney Hill (Shreveport, La.) added 14 points, and senior guard
Daviel Clements (Jesup, Ga.) scored 11.
Likins scored the first four points of the game, but the Muleriders took command for good at 15:36 in the first half on a lay-up from junior forward
Terrell Shears (Kansas City, Mo.) for a 9-7 lead. That came in the middle of an 18-0 SAU run that ended with a three-pointer from Hill and a 22-7 game at 12:20. They stretched the lead to 21 points before settling for a 44-27 margin at the half.
Southern Arkansas went up by 30 points midway the second half, before building its largest margin of 77-46 with four minutes remaining.
The Tigers had only five players in the scoring column, with Likins providing two-thirds of the point total. He was 10 of 24 from the floor and knocked down 13 of 14 free throws. Guard Matthias Capaci scored 12 points, also playing all 40 minutes.
The Muleriders shot season-highs of 57.1 percent from both the floor and beyond the arc, nailing 32 of 56, including 8 of 14 three-pointers. They hit 14 of 18 free throws.
Champion Baptist shot 32.1 percent from the floor on 17 of 53, including 7 of 27 treys, and was 15 of 18 from the foul stripe.
SAU held a 42-21 rebound advantage, a 42-20 scoring margin inside, and outscored the Tiger bench, 42-3.
Southern Arkansas returns to Great American Conference play for the remainder of the season, beginning Saturday when they host Southern Nazarene (Okla.) at approximately 4 p.m. following the women's game.
