HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider softball team swept their Opening Day of action at the UAH Charger Chillout Tournament by knocking off Trevecca Nazarene of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, 8-7 in extra innings on Friday evening in Huntsville, Alabama.
TNU scratched a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning to force bonus softball.
Placed on second base to start extra-inning play,
Leigha Doyle scored after
Chelsea Ivy reached on an error. With two outs in the inning,
Darian Harris and
Ashton Atwell walked to load the bases.
Maddie Dow was then hit-by-pitch to score Ivy and give SAU an 8-6 lead heading into the home half of the 8
th.
Southern Arkansas opened up the scoring with two runs in their first plate appearance and would break a 2-2 tie in the 4
th with a three-run home run from the bat of
Ashton Atwell.
Chelsea Ivy would leave the yard an inning later with a solo shot that put the Lady Muleriders up 6-3. But Trevecca would answer with two runs in the fifth and a run in the seventh to force extra innings, before Godwin shut the door in the seventh by
retiring the side to preserve the extra-inning win for the Lady Muleriders. Ashton Atwell went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a homerun along with a run scored and a walk. Godwin picked up the win in 1.2 innings of relief. Ivy scored twice and collected two RBIs on her homerun in the 5
th.
Darian Harris picked up two hits and scored twice to pace the Lady Muleriders.
Southern Arkansas will continue play in the UAH Charger Chillout on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon against Bellarmine followed by a matchup with Union University at 2 p.m.
