HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider softball team suffered two losses on day two of the UAH Charger Chillout falling 4-3 to Bellarmine University and 9-4 to Union University at the Metro Sportsplex in Huntsville, Alabama.
In the first game of the afternoon, SAU struck first with two runs in the third inning. With two outs,
Brooke Goad doubled and would score on a
Darian Harris RBI single.
Ashton Atwell would reach on an error and move up to second, scoring Harris.
Bellarmine's big inning would come in the 5
th as a hit-by-pitch, a walk and a bunt single would load the bases for the Lady Knights against SAU starter
Chancy Williams. Williams would earn an out via a strikeout, but Bellarmine would score four runs on a two RBI single and two fielding errors to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lady Muleriders would add a run with two outs in the 6
th after
Summer Ehrig scored
Sydney Johnson who pinch-ran for
Maddie Dow after the sophomore drew a one-out walk. SAU, however, would go down in order in the seventh to end the game.
Williams and Jami Godwin each allowed only two hits in the circle in the opening game, but Williams took the loss. Goad and Ehrig each collected two hits and a pair of RBIs.
In game two, Union University produced a strong first inning and built a 3-0 lead off of Lady Mulerider starter
Miranda Cuff. The Lady Cardinals would add six more runs in the 5
th inning against the Lady Mulerider bullpen, before Southern Arkansas found the scoreboard on a two-RBI double by Harris that scored Goad and
Courtney Hudgins.
In the 6
th,
Audrey Farfan doubled home Johnson who pinch-ran for Dow after a lead-off walk. A run would be tacked on in the 7
th after Harris homered, but Union would work around runners at first and second to secure the win.
Harris led SAU with two hits and three RBIs, while Goad registered a hit, two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Cuff scattered three hits, but took the loss in 3.1 innings as the starter.
Southern Arkansas concludes play in the "Chillout" tomorrow, February 8, with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. against Ohio Dominican followed by a 1 p.m. first pitch with Delta State.
