Lady Muleriders cruise past Ohio Dominican, fall to Delta State to conclude UAH Charger Chillout

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. –  The Southern Arkansas Lady Mulerider softball team concluded play in the UAH Charger Chillout on Sunday afternoon with an 11-3 win over Ohio Dominican and a 3-2 loss to Delta State. SAU finished their season opening weekend with a 3-3 record.

The Lady Muleriders exploded for five two-out runs in the 1st inning after SAU starter Chancy Williams retired the Lady Panthers in order to start the ballgame.

Brooke Goad was hit-by-pitch to leadoff the contest and then proceeded to steal second. Maddie Dow walked and with two outs both runners would move up a base on a passed ball. An Audrey Farfan single scored Goad and sent Dow to third to put the Lady Muleriders up 1-0.

Summer Ehrig drew a two-out walk and a throwing error scored Dow and advanced Farfan to third. Leigha Doyle singled to leftfield to score Farfan and moved up to second while Ehrig made her way to third.

The run-scoring first inning would conclude on a Chelsea Ivy two RBI double that put SAU out front 5-0.

Williams would work around two runners in the second, but find trouble in the third as ODU plated three runs on three hits to pull within two, 5-3. But the junior transfer from Youngstown State would allow no more as only one runner would reach base in the final two innings.

Despite Williams' dominance, Southern Arkansas continued to pour it on at the plate as they bookended the fifth and final inning with six runs. Ashton Atwell singled twice in the inning, driving in the final two runs in her last at-bat to capture the run-rule. Farfan, Doyle and Goad all doubled with the latter two driving in a pair of runs apiece before Atwell ended it with the aforementioned two RBI single.

Doyle led SAU with three RBIs and joined Goad, Atwell and Farfan with two hits apiece while Dow walked three times. Williams allowed only three hits in 5 innings of work.

In SAU's final game of the tournament, the Lady Muleriders scratched a run in the first inning courtesy of Farfan single that scored Darian Harris who reached base on a one-out double.

Lady Mulerider starter Jami Godwin would work around two runners in the second and third innings and get out of a bases loaded jam in the fourth before SAU added another run in the fifth courtesy of Goad, who crossed home after a leadoff double and a Lady Statesman error on a pop out by Dow.

Delta State would answer with a two RBI single with two outs in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the game at two.

Each team would strand two runners in the sixth and Southern Arkansas would only produce a baserunner in the seventh before the Lady Statesmen loaded the bases and won on a walk-off single.

Harris and Farfan led SAU with two hits apiece. Godwin suffered the loss but only allowed seven hits in 5.1 innings.

The Lady Muleriders return to action on Valentine's Day weekend as they travel to Bentonville, Arkansas, to play in the UAM 8-STATE Classic with doubleheaders on February 13-15. Check out Muleriderathletics.com for more information.
