MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (7-10, 4-7 GAC) fell tonight in Monticello, Arkansas by a final score of 57-68 to the University of Arkansas-Monticello (8-9, 4-7 GAC).
The Muleriders came out with energy early, trading baskets and establishing an inside presence in the opening minutes. SAU consistently attacked the rim in the first half, controlling the paint and creating quality looks while limiting UAM's transition opportunities. That effort allowed Southern Arkansas to stay within striking distance, closing the half on a strong note and heading into the break trailing just 28–26.
Arkansas–Monticello was able to build momentum early in the second half, but Southern Arkansas continued to respond with defensive stops and timely baskets. The Muleriders remained aggressive offensively, attacking the lane and generating second-chance opportunities as they worked to cut into the deficit. Despite a late push, UAM was able to extend its lead in the closing minutes.
Jair Horton led all scorers with 14 points for Southern Arkansas, finishing efficiently while contributing on the glass.
Troy'reon Ramos added 10 points and remained aggressive throughout the contest, while Jakourion Key chipped in eight points to provide a spark offensively.
Kendal Parker added six points, including a key three-pointer late in the second half.
Southern Arkansas finished the game with 36 points in the paint and battled on the boards, showing physicality and effort on both ends of the floor. The Muleriders competed until the final horn and will look to build on their first-half execution and interior scoring as conference play continues.
"Started off hot on both ends of the ball. We took great shots and we really were physical early but that didn't continue," said Head Coach
Mark Rutledge. "A couple bad possessions on both ends of the ball erased our lead and then we went cold from the floor. Some foul trouble just made things even harder. We can't continue to have self inflicted wounds and expect to overcome them night in and night out. It will get fixed."
