MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Mulerider Volleyball (4-10 | 0-2 GAC) continued Great American Conference (GAC) competition with the group hosting the Arkansas Tech University Golden Suns (6-6 | 2-0 GAC) Tuesday night inside the W.T. Watson Center. In a four-set match, Southern Arkansas fell to ATU 3-1 after winning the first set and falling in the next three.
SAU jumped out to a quick lead, 3-0, and never once was overcome by the Golden Suns during the set. The group would see retaliation from ATU at times, tying the set twice, but Southern Arkansas kept pulling away before the Suns could overtake the Muleriders during the set. During the first set, the two units looked evenly matched, as both teams roughly accounted for .190 attack percentage with the Suns leading with a .194 to the Muleriders' .190. To cap off SAU's set one win, freshman Addy Vollmer recorded a kill with an assist from Hayden Pinard.
While Arkansas Tech gained a 5-3 lead early on in the second set, the Muleriders didn't back down then as they rattled off seven points unanswered to gain a 10-5 advantage. With momentum looking to be in the Muleriders' favor, Tech got right back into the match after going on a 10-3 stretch to reclaim their two-point lead, 15-13. Then the set became a back-and-forth battle as the Blue and Gold went on a short 3-1 run to tie the outing at 16-16. Shortly after, Southern Arkansas recorded the next three points in the set to take a 19-17 lead over the Suns. ATU countered right back with a 5-1 stretch to, once again, reacquire their two-point lead, 22-20. Southern Arkansas stormed right back with a 5-1 run of their own to go up 24-23 before the Golden Suns tied it back up at 24-24. After gaining set point again with a kill by Addy Vollmer, Arkansas Tech stood strong and with a kill and a pair of SAU attack errors, the Suns claimed set two, 27-25.
From then on, the Golden Suns were nothing short of golden, as the unit handled the remainder of the match, defeating the Muleriders in sets three and four 25-16 and 25-19.
