MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas University Muleriders (18-11, 12-6) are set for a midweek matchup against the No. 14 ranked Delta State University Statesmen (22-7, 15-3). First pitch is set for 3:00 PM on Tuesday, March 25th at Walker Stadium.
Series History
The Statesmen currently hold a 56-35 lead in the all-time series history against the Muleriders. The first meeting between the two teams came on March 27th, 1991, a 15-5 win for Delta State. The teams most recent matchup came on March 27th, 2024, a 1-0 win for the Statesmen. The teams were scheduled to meet earlier this season in Cleveland, Mississippi but due to inclement weather the game was canceled.
A Look at SAU
The Muleriders are riding high fresh off of a three game GAC series sweep this past weekend over Southwestern Oklahoma State University keeping them tied for second in the conference standings with UAM as both teams boast a 12-6 record in conference play. The Muleriders will look to keep their momentum going against the Statesmen having already beaten No. 4 ranked UT-Tyler in a midweek earlier this season.
SAU completed their big weekend sweep against a tough SWOSU team this weekend with a 7-3 victory over the Bulldogs. The long ball was the difference maker for the Blue and Gold in the series as
Jack Roubik crushed a home run in game one that proved to be the difference in the game. Roubik also had a home run in game three for his second of the weekend. Roubik had a fantastic weekend at the plate for the Muleriders going 6-for-9 (.667) with three RBIs, two home runs, three walks and no strikeouts at the plate.
Lee Matsuzaki is still the clubhouse leader with his .364 batting average and 44 hits alongside 13 doubles. Matsuzaki also boasts a 1.002 OPS and .579 slugging percentage.
Trace Shoup follows closely behind Lee with his .355 batting average. Shoup also has 33 hits on the season and is tied for the team lead in home runs with six.
Austin Adair still leads the pitching staff with his 3.13 ERA and 6-1 record as he picked up his first loss of the season on Tuesday against Henderson State.
Jeremy Adorno leads the team in strikeouts with 55 fanned batters through eight starts and in innings pitched with 49.1.
A Look at Delta State
The Statesmen are fresh off of a hard-fought series sweep over the University of West Alabama this past weekend. Delta State comfortably won game one of the series with a 6-0 victory but saw a much tougher time the rest of the series. Game two of the series required 12 innings to determine a winner as the Statesmen escaped with a 6-5 victory which was then followed by a 1-0 victory in game three to clinch the series sweep which also kept them locked in at the top of the Gulf South Conference standings.
Brett Burrell currently leads the offense for the Statesmen with his .408 batting average and 40 hits. Burrell also leads the team in home runs (7), doubles (7), OPS (1.218), slugging percentage (.714) and on base percentage (.504). Wes Warnock currently trails behind Burrell with his .306 batting average and 33 hits. Dylan Coleman also provides offensive firepower with six home runs through 29 games. Drake Fontenot currently leads the pitching staff for the Statesmen with his 0.64 ERA and 7-0 record. Fontenot also leads the staff in innings pitched (56), strikeouts (55), batting average against (.179) and WHIP (.84).
