OKAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Southern Arkansas University softball team picked up their first win of the season over a ranked opponent on Saturday evening, as they took down No. 14 Oklahoma Christian 1-0. The Muleriders earned a split on the day as they would fall to No. 15 Rogers State University 2-1 in the first game of the day. The Muleriders are now 5-8 on the season and will close out tomorrow's UCO/OC Tournament with two games.
RSU 2 SAU 1 | 9 innings
Seven innings would not be enough for either team in game one as RSU and SAU were tied at 1-1 after regulation. RSU plated one run in the top of the third inning to draw first blood on a sac fly. A solo shot from
Jaxynn Dyson over the centerfield wall would put the Muleriders on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning and would go on to be the only run of the game for SAU. After three innings of scoreless softball, RSU was able to push across the winning run in the top of ninth inning on a throwing error.
Kiana Pogroszewski took the loss in the circle after throwing all nine innings. She allowed five hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out six batters.
Jade Miller, Dyson,
Mariah Hamilton, and
Alese Casper all had a hit for SAU.
SAU 1, OC 0
Despite being outhit 8-4, only one hit mattered in the takedown of No. 15 Oklahoma Christian, and that one hit was a big one off of the bat of
Jade Miller as she crushed her team leading 5
th home run of the season over the left field wall in the third inning to put SAU up 1-0. The defense behind
Sydney Ward played a big part in the win today as they were critical in not allowing any of the eight base runners that reached base to get home.
Ward picked up her fourth win of the season after tossing a complete game shutout and striking out three while allowing only one walk.
Jade Miller collected two hits, while Dyson and
Taylor Murphy finished with one a piece.
SAU will take on Fort Hays State tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. followed by their final game of the tournament at 12:15 as they go up against Nebraska-Kearney. There will be no live coverage for tomorrow's contests.
