Mulerider Tennis Set to Compete in GAC Championships

Greg Owen’s men and women look to take home some hardware from the GAC Fall Tournament

Magnolia, Ark. - The Southern Arkansas University Men's and Women's tennis teams will head to Russellville this weekend to take part in the GAC Championships starting on Friday, October 21. The Muleriders will be competing in both solo and doubles play, but will be competing as individuals, as team play begins in the spring.

The Women's side has seen Fall Tournament success in senior Lena Milosevic who won the Flight 2 title in 2021 and the Flight 3 title in 2019 as well as junior Sarah Roy who claimed the Flight 4 title last fall. The men flourished in the 2021 fall championship with junior Ole Valkyser producing a Flight 2 Singles title in addition to claiming victory at the Flight 1 Doubles while junior Gabriel Breitenmoser claimed the Flight 2 Doubles title.

In their first tournament of the year, fifth year head coach Greg Owen say both his men and women's teams capture numerous flight victories at the Tyler Invitational. Annika Berrendorf found victory on the women's side at Flight 3 while Valkyser picked up the win at Flight 2 and Melvin Vix claimed Flight 6.

The team also competed in the ITA Regional where the women won eight singles matches and claimed six doubles wins while the men notched 13 singles wins and claimed 5 doubles matches in the highly competitive field. Ben Schneider won the men's consolation title after knocking out teammate Vix.

The GAC Championships will serve as the Muleriders' first appearance since September 25 when they wrapped up play in Edmond, Oklahoma at the ITA Regional. The women will face Harding, Arkansas Tech, Southeastern Oklahoma, Henderson and Ouachita. The Southern Arkansas men will compete against Ouachita, Harding and Southeastern Oklahoma.

The tournament is set to start on Friday morning and run through Sunday. The Women play at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex on campus, while the men will play at Russellville High School. There are four singles flights on the men's side and seven singles flights on the women's side. There are two doubles flights on the men's side and four doubles flights on the women's side.
