MAGNOLIA, Ark. – (RV) Southern Arkansas rallied at No. 3 doubles as a spectacular comeback effort from the duo of
Serena Gill and
Honoka Yoshimura provided SAU the first point of Tuesday's nonconference match with Arkansas Tech. The Muleriders then won a trio of three-set matches to push past the Golden Suns 6-1 inside the friendly confines of Live Oaks Tennis Courts and break a seven-match losing streak.
The Muleriders (2-7) improve to 15-0 all-time at home since rebooting as a program in 2018-19. Gill and Yoshimura rallied from down 5-2 to win 7-6 (7-4) over Arkansas Tech's Megan Bell and Isabella Major to put the Muleriders out front 1-0. The duo of
Angela Vargas and
Lena Milosevic accounted for the first of the two wins in doubles play as the duo knocked off Michelle Khoo and Aastha Dargude 6-3.
SAU's
Kalley Smith won at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Major to stake the Muleriders to a 2-0 lead. Yoshimura then won at No. 5 with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 showing against Bell. Vargas and Khoo then battled to a third set before the former dismissed her opponent 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to give SAU the match.
Dargude topped Gill 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 3, but the Muleriders won at No. 2 (Milosevic 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3 vs. Lea Grinberg) and No. 4 (
Sarah Roy 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3)) to close out the match.
Southern Arkansas improves to 5-0 vs. Arkansas Tech since the start of 2018-19.
Southern Arkansas returns to action on Thursday as Great American Conference play opens up. The Muleriders will host Henderson State at 11 a.m. and Ouachita at 3 p.m. on March 11. Results will be made available at
