Conroe, Texas – The SAU Softball team outscored its opponents 15-4 today, starting their season off on the right foot.
In game one, the Muleriders only needed six innings to dispatch St. Mary's (TX) by a score of 10-0.
The scoring started in the second inning with
Christina Hill tripling in
Alese Casper; Hill would score later in the inning on a passed ball.
In the fifth inning,
Laina Suesue and
Faith Otts set the table with singles before
Chelsea Fagan sent everyone home with a three-run shot. That marks Fagan's 20
th homerun, tied for seventh-most in school history.
The Muleriders doubled their lead in the next frame, with Hill and
Jaxynn Dyson reaching base before Suesue sent them home with a triple. Suesue would then score on a passed ball.
An
Elisa Favela walk and a
Faith Otts single would put two runners in scoring position, with Favela scoring on a passed ball and Otts scoring on a Fagan sacrifice fly.
Victoria Taylor, for the third year in a row, started the first game of the season. The senior scattered three hits and a walk over six innings, striking out six batters in the process. The Greenwood native is up to 586 career strikeouts, as she now closes to within 14 of being the first in SAU history to reach 600.
Game two for the Muleriders was a tighter affair against Angelo State. The Muleriders scored two runs in each of the first two innings.
The first inning runs came via a Fagan RBI double, scoring Otts. Fagan would later score on a passed ball.
The second inning of game two was a carbon copy of game one, with Casper singling then scoring courtesy of a Hill triple. Hill would score three batters later through a Suesue single.
The Rams pulled it back to 4-3 in the fourth inning, but the Muleriders tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with another Suesue single, this time scoring Dyson.
The Rams responded with a run in the top of the final frame but left the bases loaded as starter
Sydney Wader was able to get out of that messy jam with a victory.
For the two games, Suesue and Fagan both recorded four hits and four RBIs. Suesue hit a triple while Fagan hit a homerun and two doubles.
Otts went 3-6 with a double and two walks, and Hill recorded two hits, both RBI triples.
Wader went the distance, allowing four runs while striking out seven.
The Muleriders are 2-0 on the year, they conclude tomorrow in Conroe facing #2 Texas A&M-Kingsville and #21 Tarleton State.
