Conroe, Texas – The SAU Softball team ended their time in south Texas with a doozy of a doubleheader, facing #2 Texas A&M-Kingsville and #21 Tarleton State.
With both contests decided by only a single run, the Muleriders' rally came up short in game one but were able to come back against the Texans in game two.
The Javelinas scored three runs in the first two innings, chasing starter
Victoria Taylor after she faced only seven batters.
The second-ranked team were then able to produce two runs off
Elisa Favela in the fifth inning; the Muleriders scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings but came just short of an early-season upset.
Sarah Evans tripled in
Faith Otts, and Evans herself scored due to a Casper sacrifice fly.
Maeson Grace led the seventh off with an infield single before a pitch hit
Laina Suesue and Otts reached on an error. With the bags loaded, Fagan singled, scoring Grace and Suesue to bring it within one.
The Muleriders jumped out to early lead in game two, with
Faith Otts doubling in Suesue.
The Texans would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning for the early lead. It would not be until the third inning before the Muleriders responded with a two-out rally.
Otts, hit by a pitch, scored on a
Chelsea Fagan triple. Fagan herself scored through a Favela single that proved to be the difference.
Sydney Wader picked up her second win of the season. She went five innings, striking out five. Favela threw the final two innings, picking up her first save of the season.
On the day, Favela picked up a game-deciding hit as well as throwing eight innings of relief, only allowing two runs and striking out eight batters.
The Muleriders are 3-1 on the season. They play again next weekend in East Texas as a part of the Texas A&M-Commerce/UT-Tyler Invitational.
