MAGNOLIA – The SAU Women's Basketball team, for the first time in 2020, has notched back-to-back victories thanks to a 64-62 victory over Southern Nazarene. The Muleriders forced 24 turnovers and outscored the Crimson Storm 35-28 in the second half to secure the victory.
Entering the fourth quarter down three, the Muleriders took the lead for good with 2:31 left in the contest through a pair of
Kylie Warren free throws. After Alexus Jones split a pair at the charity stripe,
Kisi Young missed a three-pointer, only for Warren to grab the offensive board, which led to an
Ariana Guinn make.
A block by
Diamond Morris led to Young draining the dagger on a step-back jumper that would make James Harden blush.
Young's make would put the Muleriders up five with 74 seconds left, and despite a late Storm comeback, held onto the lead for a win over the team entering today second in the GAC standings.
Morris, in addition to her huge block late in the game, led the Muleriders in scoring with 14 points, including 2-5 from three-point range. The freshman also grabbed three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Young scored in double-digits for the second consecutive game with 13 points, none bigger than her last two with just over a minute to play. The Magnolia native grabbed a team-high five rebounds and shot 6-10 from the floor.
Fatarah Kinnard continues to assert herself as a defensive presence, grabbing six steals in addition to her seven points.
Camryn Fennell helped the Mulerider offense along in the first quarter, recording four assists. The sophomore point guard also scored three points, grabbed four rebounds and three steals in 16 minutes on the floor.
The Muleriders improve to 13-5 overall and 7-5 in conference play. Currently sitting at seventh place in the conference
standings, the Muleriders go on the road next weekend to play eighth-place Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday and ninth-place Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday.
