Magnolia, Ark. – The SAU Softball team completed their sweep of Henderson State today, with the victories ensuring the Muleriders will enter next week's GAC Tournament as the top seed.
The Muleriders took home a pair of four-run victories, one day after winning a pair of games by a single run.
Laina Suesue led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run off Reddies starter Michelle Sorenson. Next batter
Sarah Evans singled and later scored in the inning courtesy of a two-out
Chelsea Fagan single.
The Reddies tied the game back up in the top of the fourth through a Monica Monreal home run, but the hosts took the lead back in the bottom of the inning through a
Christina Hill single.
The visitors manufactured a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead; Fagan hit a sacrifice fly to score Evans to tie the game.
The Muleriders doubled their run total in the bottom of the sixth, carrying a four-run lead into the final frame: back-to-back singles by Suesue and Evans, who both advanced on a wild pitch, scored by a
Faith Otts double, who scored on a Fagan single, who later scored on a
Savanah Martinez double to account for the four runs.
Sydney Wader, who started the game for the Muleriders, got a no-decision, lasting five innings, giving up three hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out nine.
Elisa Favela threw the final two innings of relief, picking up her 12
th win of the season, not allowing a hit and striking out two.
Game two saw the Muleriders jump out to a one-run lead courtesy of a Hill single. Reddies third baseman Ashleigh Erb hit the first pitch of the third inning over the left field wall, the only Reddies hit on the game.
The Muleriders broke the deficit in the fifth inning with a throwing error by Erb allowing runner Evans to score take the lead.
Fagan led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run, her 19
th on the season. Suesue delivered a two-out single to score a pair of runners and put the score at its final of 5-1.
Victoria Taylor picked up her 11
th win of the season, only allowing the one hit and one run while striking out 10.
The Muleriders will travel to Bentonville and head into a first-round matchup with Ouachita, the eight seed in this year's tournament.
