Arkadelphia, Ark. – The SAU Softball team got back to their winning ways on Friday, shutting out Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia in both games of the doubleheader, winning game one 1-0 despite not recording a hit and game two 6-0, where they recorded quite a few hits.
Game one was the quintessential pitcher duel, with
Sydney Wader and Marissa Butler going back and forth in the circle. Wader only allowed two hits and a walk through six innings while Butler blanked the Muleriders, only allowing a single hit by pitch heading into the final frame.
Butler hit
Savanah Martinez to lead off the inning, only the second Mulerider baserunner of the day.
Faith Otts drew a walk, and both runners advanced on an
Elisa Favela sacrifice bunt.
Chelsea Fagan struck out to make it two out before
Sarah Evans drew a walk to load the bases. For the 13
th time this season, a pitch hit
Rachel Miller, which led to the winning run scoring.
Wader picked up her 20
th win of the season, throwing her 17
th complete game and ninth shutout in the process. The junior allowed only a pair of hits and a walk, striking out eight.
The visiting Muleriders' offense kicked into gear in game two, with
Chelsea Fagan leading off a three-run second inning with a triple. Evans scored the first baseman with a single, and Miller came through with an RBI double to score Evans. Miller would later score on a
Christina Hill groundout.
Fagan led off another scoring inning for the Muleriders, leading off the fourth with a double. Miller hit her second RBI double of the game later in the inning to score Fagan.
The Muleriders added runs in the fifth and seventh innings, scoring on an error with two outs in the fifth and a two-out solo home run for
Elisa Favela, her ninth of the season.
Victoria Taylor improves to 8-3 on the season, going five innings and only allowing two hits and three walks. The junior recorded 11 strikeouts, including striking out the first seven batters she faced on the day and eight Tigers in their first time through the lineup.
Brooke Ford-Nelson pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing two hits and recording a strikeout.
The Muleriders are 39-10 on the season and 30-7 in conference play. They are back in action against the Tigers tomorrow.
