Monticello, Ark. – The SAU Softball team did what they have done each of the past 17 games entering today, claiming victory in a pair of games against conference rivals Arkansas-Monticello on Wednesday.
The Muleriders' wins were a tale of two games, with game one relying on another performance in the circle by
Sydney Wader and game two seeing the fourth-ranked team in the country leave the yard four times.
Scoring in game one started in the second inning after
Savanah Martinez led the inning off with a walk.
Sarah Pitre doubled down the left field line to score Martinez and put the visitors on the board first. A
Rachel Miller single scored Pitre and doubled the Mulerider lead in the second inning.
Elisa Favela singled in
Sarah Evans in the top of the seventh to give the game its final score line of 3-0.
Sydney Wader threw her 15
th complete game and eighth shutout of the season as she improves to 19-2 on the season. The junior allowed eight hits while striking out four.
Game two saw Martinez start the scoring once again in the second inning, as the left fielder hit her ninth home run of the season to score herself and
Chelsea Fagan, who started the inning off with a double to the left center gap.
The Muleriders doubled their lead the next inning, with Evans leading off the inning with her third triple of the season, and
Faith Otts bringing the both of them home with her 12
th home run of the season and third home run in the past five games.
The Cotton Blossom added two runs in the bottom of the inning – cutting the deficit in half.
The Muleriders responded by adding seven runs in the fourth inning behind six hits – singles from
Laina Suesue, Miller and
Hallie Saintignan loaded the bases before Evans drew a walk; Otts singled in Miller to make it 6-2 before a Favela sacrifice fly put another run on the board.
Fagan then proceeded to clear the bases with her league leading 16
th home run of the season, a three-run big fly to left field to make it 10-2. Martinez then followed with her second home run of the game and 10
th of the season to put the score at its final of 11-2.
Victoria Taylor picked up her seventh win of the season, throwing all five innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out five.
The Muleriders improve to 37-6 and 28-3 in conference play. They host second-place Arkansas Tech on Sunday and Monday in a four-game conference series.
