Magnolia, Ark. – The SAU Softball team took on their rivals from the east, Arkansas-Monticello, in a rivalry midweek matchup that saw the fifth-ranked team in the country blank the Cotton Blossoms on the evening.
The Muleriders struck first in game one in the first inning, with
Savanah Martinez doubling to the left center gap, scoring
Chelsea Fagan and
Elisa Favela and putting two runs on the board for the home team.
Faith Otts hit her school-record 12
th sacrifice fly in the second inning to score
Rachel Miller, and Favela, the next batter, doubled in
Sarah Evans to put the score at 4-0.
Otts finished off the scoring two innings later, hitting her ninth home run of the season, a two-run shot that scored Evans.
Sydney Wader improved to 15-2 on the season as she threw a complete-game two-hitter, striking out seven and walking one, only going three batters over the minimum faced.
Game two saw both teams struggle for offense, with a total of two hits taking place in the 80-minute contest.
Otts led off the fourth inning with a single to left field and promptly moved to second after a pitch hit Favela. A Fagan fielder's choice removed Otts from the bases, and Martinez hit her eighth double of the season to score Favela. A
Sarah Pitre sacrifice fly scored Fagan and put the Muleriders in the driver's seat for the remainder of the game.
Elisa Favela threw her third no-hitter on the season, only seeing a hit by pitch and a walk separate her from perfection. The Hawaiian hurler struck out a season-high 12 batters as she lowers her ERA on the season to 1.64. On the season, the Ewa Beach native has 50 strikeouts compared to only ten walks.
The Muleriders improve to 28-6 on the season and 19-3 in conference play. They make their final road trip of the season to Oklahoma to take on Oklahoma Baptist in a four-game conference series.
