RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – With the regular season champions decided in all six Great American Conference-sponsored fall sports, the league announced the first standings for the 2019-20 GAC All-Sports Trophy. In the Commissioner's Trophy standings (OVR Points), Southern Arkansas enters in fifth place with 24.5 points earned from four of the department's 14 sports. For the President's Trophy, which is given to the university with the highest percentage of possible points earned, the Muleriders are also in fifth place after having captured 57% of its possible points across the four sports.
Southern Arkansas is in the thick of the race for both trophies as third through eighth place in the Commissioner's Standings is separated by only 7.5 points. The Muleriders are just two points back of fourth place; the department's place in the standings at this time last year. In the President's Cup, the Muleriders earned 57% of the 43 points possible. Twelve points were available for the regular season champions in football and volleyball as well a dozen points for the champion in women's cross country. Seven points were available for the men's cross country champion.
The SAU Men's and Women's Cross Country teams combined for 14 of SAU's 24.5 points in the fall with the Mulerider Women claiming a department-high nine points. SAU Football also earned nine points, while Mulerider Volleyball added 1.5 points.
NOTE: Schools earn points toward the GAC All-Sports Trophy based upon their finish in all sports that are sponsored by six or more schools. The regular season standings determine the points in sports with a round-robin schedule. The conference championship event determines the points in sports without a regular season format. The percentage points are determined by total points scored divided by the total number points available.
