Newcomers lead way as Muleriders rout Chargers

Magnolia, Ark. – The SAU Women's Basketball defeated Southeastern Baptist College tonight at the W. T. Watson Center by a score of 77-37 in a game that saw four players score in double digits, as well as new additions to the team accounting for 75 of the team's 77 points.

For the second game in a row, freshman guard Ariana Guinn led the team in scoring, dropping 17 points on 4-8 shooting, including 1-2 from three-point range as well as going 8-10 from the free throw line. The Hot Springs native also had four assists, three rebounds and three steals in 22 minutes of action.

Freshman forward Jerica Bell followed close behind, scoring 16 points on 7-12 shooting in addition to making both of her free throw attempts. Bell added six boards and an assist and a steal in 28 minutes of game time.

Junior guard Lena Maledon led the charge behind the arc for the Muleriders, who went 8-21 from deep as a team. The French international went 3-6 from three, and made her two shots inside the arc to finish with 15 points and six rebounds.

The Muleriders (1-2) first victory comes on the heels of losing both of their opening weekend games as a part of the GAC/MIAA Crossover. Coach Adam Collins gets his first win as SAU's head coach in a game that saw the Muleriders outperform the Chargers (4-1) in every statistical category. The most impressive stat of the night, however, might be the Muleriders only holding the Chargers to two points in the fourth quarter.

Junior Tamera Shaver was the fourth Mulerider in double digits, scoring 12 points on 3-5 shooting (2-3 from three) and grabbed five rebounds with two steals and an assist.

Senior Alyssa Crase led the team in rebounds for the second game this season, grabbing 10 and scoring four points as well as recording two steals. Freshman Kylie Warren scored eight points and grabbed seix rebounds, and sophomore Maggie Evans had an all-around night, scoring two points, grabbing four rebounds, one assist, two blocks and four steals in 27 minutes.

The Muleriders hit the road for the first time this season as they travel up to Rolla, Missouri this Saturday to take on Missouri S&T.
