RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – SAU Freshmen Simone Simas and Brenda Teixeira each garnered Great American Conference Individual Flight Championships on Sunday to highlight Southern Arkansas' first league competition since the program's reboot in November of 2017.
 
The historic showings included Simas knocking off Harding's Allison Carpenter 6-3, 6-2 to win the Flight 4 title, while Teixeira toppled Stefy Varon of Oklahoma Baptist 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 to take home the Flight 6 hardware. Below is each player's journey to their respective titles.
   
The pair almost added additional tournament accolade as they came up just short in a semifinal match of the Doubles Flight 3/4.
 
Joanna Nowakowska and Angela Vargas each advanced to the Flight 1/2 Semifinals and as a doubles team the duo finished one match away from playing for the Doubles Flight 1/2 title. Serena Gill competed in the Flight 5 title match.
 
In men's action, Yuri Gondouin and Gustavo Kerber advanced to the Doubles Flight 1 Semifinal. It was an all SAU Flight 3/4 Consolation as Iker Brull defeated teammate Jonathan Gilmore 8-0 and advanced to the finals of that bracket against Gustavo Kerber, who defeated Southeastern Oklahoma's Jason Roberts 8-5.
 
Raymond Marin and Aleksandr Pokusaev came up just short of playing each other for the Flight 2 title. In the Flight 1 Consolation, Gondouin fell in the title match to Ouachita Baptist's Juan Moncada 8-6.
