"Senior Day" slug fest sends No. 14 Southern Arkansas to series sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma

MAGNOLIA, Ark. | The Lady Mulerider softball team flexed their offensive power in Saturday's doubleheader after scoring a combined 29 runs on the day on 32 hits, 9 of those hits being homeruns that resulted in a pair of run-rule wins to sweep the series with Southeastern.

PITCHING DECISIONS- GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED- GAME 1
  • SAU scored the first runs of the game in the first inning. Maddie Dow and Jill Roye both singled up the middle to jump start the inning and Monica Islava blasted a homerun to left field that put SAU on the board 3-0.
  • In the next inning, Southeastern managed to tie the game on a 3-run double. Immediately following the base-clearing hit, Symphoni Shomo singled to right field and plated the go-ahead run to close out the inning, 4-3 SOSU.
  • SAU retaliated in the bottom of that frame and scored three runs on a pair of hits to regain the lead, 6-4.
  • Faith Otts tallied the first RBI in that frame after plating Duran on her batted ball to first base. Roye followed a pair of walked batters later as she laced the first pitch she saw down the right field line and plated the final pair of runs in the inning.
  • Southeastern cut their deficit by one after they scored a run on two hits to make it a 6-5 score, SAU.
  • Rachel Miller helped extend SAU's lead to 9-5 on a 2-run blast to left-centerfield. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Roye followed with an RBI single to centerfield from Islava accounted for the final pair of runs in the inning.
  • Southeastern strung a pair of hits together to add two additional runs to their score, 11-7 SAU.
  • Three solo homeruns, an RBI single, and a grand slam allowed SAU to take the 20-9 run-rule victory in the sixth inning. Godoyo, Miller, and Goad each left the yard and Godoyo came to the plate for the second time in the frame to plate another RBI on a single up the middle. With bases loaded, Duran stroked her first pitch over the right-centerfield wall for a walk-off grand slam to capture the run-rule victory.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • SAU pitcher, Roye, pitched three innings and got the win in the circle with five strikeouts and allowed only a pair of runs on three hits.
  • SOSU's pitcher, Emily Cudd, took the loss in the circle after giving up 18 of SAU's 20 runs along with 18 hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
AT THE PLATE
  • Duran led the offense with five RBI's including a grand slam.
  • Islava followed with four RBI's on a pair of hits including a homerun.
  • Roye and Miller each collected three RBI's. Roye was 2-for-2 at the dish with a pair of runs scored and Miller was 3-for-4 with three runs scored including a pair of homeruns.
  • Godoyo had a pair of RBI's after going 3-for-5 on the day with three runs scored.
 

PITCHING DECISIONS- GAME 2

HOW IT HAPPENED- GAME 2
  • The Savage Storm struck first in the third inning on an RBI double down the left field line to establish their 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of that frame, Goad singled and Dow walked to set up Roye's 3-run bomb to right-center that lifted SAU past Southeastern 3-1.
  • Miller smashed her third homerun of the day in the fourth inning to extended SAU's lead 5-1.
  • SAU scored an additional pair of runs in the fifth inning on three doubles. Dow lead off with a 9-pitch at bat that resulted in a double off the wall that nearly cleared the fence. Casada banged an RBI double to left field to plate Dow and Godoyo swapped places with Casada as she plated her on an RBI double.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Miller led off the frame with a single up the middle and pinch hitter, Miranda Cuff, ended the game in walk-off fashion as she connected with her first career homerun that was an absolute tank over the left-centerfield wall, 9-1 SAU.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • SAU starting pitcher, Jenkins, picked up her third win of the season after allowing only one run on six hits.
  • Jenkins had five strikeouts and did not walk a single batter in her six-innings pitched.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • Roye's three RBI's in the game led the offense and also broke the single season RBI record at SAU that was previously set by her teammate, Dow, at 61.
  • Miller was 2-for-3 on the day with a homerun and a pair of runs scored.
  • Cuff was 1-for-1 at the dish with a pinch-hit walk-off homerun that have her a pair of RBI's in the game.
  • Casada and Godoyo each tallied an RBI in the game on a hit.
 
 
OF NOTE
  • SAU combined for 47 runs in the series with Southeastern with 60 total hits.
  • Of SAU's 60 hits, 12 of those left the yard.
  • SAU also had a pair of grand slams in the series.
  • The 20-runs were the second-best in program history for the single season.
 
 
UP NEXT
  • The Lady Muleriders will travel to Bentonville next weekend to play in the Great American Conference tournament. SAU will be the second seed in the tournament and their first-round game is to be determined.
