Lady Muleriders use long ball to power past Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. –  The Lady Mulerider softball team secured a series sweep over Oklahoma Baptist after a combined offensive effort of 30 runs on 37 hits on Saturday contributed to a pair of run-rule victories. Game one ended in five innings with a 17-2 score, following a 13-1 score in game two that also ended in five innings.

PITCHING DECISIONS- GAME 1

HOW IT HAPPENED- GAME 1
  • The Lady Mulerider bats came out hot early in the game as they put up nine runs on nine hits in the top of the first inning. Brooke Goad set the tone early as she belted a solo bomb to center-field. Hits from Maddie Dow, Marina Duran, Monica IslavaMegan Godoyo, Tyler Casada, and Rachel Miller accounted for the next four runs that put SAU ahead 5-0.
  • In that same frame, Goad and Dow, in their second appearances at the plate blasted a pair of home runs to extend the SAU lead out to 9-0.
  • In the third inning, SAU tacked on six more runs on six hits, three of those hits being home runs from Roye, Duran, and Islava that contributed to a 15-1 advantage over Oklahoma Baptist.
  •  Godoyo and pinch hitter Reagan Patterson each went big-fly in the top of the fifth before the Bison plated their second and final run in the bottom of that frame to clinch a 17-2 run-rule victory for SAU.
 
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Starting pitcher, Victoria Taylor, was dominant in the circle for SAU as she struck out six of the 16 batters she faced in four innings pitched.
  • Taylor gave up only one run on a pair of hits.
  • Reagan Nichols came in as relief in the fifth inning holding the Bison to just two runs in the game after allowing just one.
 
AT THE PLATE
  •  SAU offense combined for 17 runs on 20 hits; the first time since 2015 that the Lady Muleriders have scored as many as 17 runs in a game.
  • With eight home runs in game one, SAU broke the previous record of six home runs in a single game. 
  • Goad was 3-for-4 at the dish with a pair of home runs and four RBI's including a walk.
  • Roye and Godoyo each collected three RBI's on a pair of hits including a homerun each.
  • Dow and Islava each tallied a pair of RBI's on two hits including a homerun.
  • Casasa, Duran, and Patterson each had an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED- GAME 2
  • SAU continued their hitting streak in the second game after scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the first inning courtesy of RBI's from Duran and Casada.
  • Dow connected with her second homerun on the day after a 3-run bomb to center field put SAU ahead by seven in the top of the third inning. Roye followed her up with her second homer on the day with a solo bomb out to center field that accounted for the last run of that frame.
  • The Lady Bison put up a single run in the bottom of the fourth to take away the run-rule before SAU retaliated in the fifth with a 5-run inning on five hits that put the run-rule back into effect eventually leading to a 13-1 victory.
  • That inning started as Dow singled to left field to score Goad who was previously issued a walk. Roye followed with a single to right that scored a run. The last three runs were plated after Islava blasted a homerun to left-field that gave the Lady Muleriders their 11th homerun on the day.
 
 
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Starting pitcher, Kaylee Garner, pitched an exceptional game allowing only one run on five hits in four innings pitched.
  • Garner did not issue any free passes in the circle and had four strikeouts.
  • Roye came in as relief in the last inning, giving up only one hit and striking out one.
 
AT THE PLATE
  • SAU combined for 13 runs on 17 hits in the game.
  •  Dow led the offense with four RBI's on a pair of hits and three runs scored.
  • Islava followed with three RBI's on three hits and one run scored.
  • Roye and Casada each collected a pair of RBI's on three hits.
  • Duran tallied an RBI on a pair of hits and two runs scored.

UP NEXT
  • The Lady Muleriders continue GAC play next weekend with a four-game series at home against Southern Nazarene University. The first doubleheader is set for 4 pm on Friday at Dawson Field inside Mulerider Complex.
