MAGNOLIA, Ark. – A six-run bottom of the eighth inning broke a seven-all tie and proved to be the difference as the Southern Arkansas baseball team completed a three-game sweep over GAC preseason favorites, Oklahoma Baptist with a 13-7 win on Saturday afternoon at Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.
That defining inning was fueled by a pair of home runs as
Mark Fontenot and
Jacob Richardson went back-to-back. Fontenot's blast was a grand slam that put the Muleriders up by five, 12-7, and Richardson's was the exclamation point that pushed the SAU run total to a lucky 13.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oklahoma Baptist jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first, but the Muleriders answered right back with three runs in the bottom half. In that inning, Trevor Rucker had a RBI double, James Trevanion notched a RBI single and Michael Davis had a sacrifice fly.
- The Bison plated another single run in the second to make it 3-2, SAU, but the Muleriders pushed across two runs of their own to push their lead out to three at 5-2. Both runs that inning for SAU scored on bases loaded walks with the first being issued to Fontenot and the second to Richardson.
- That score held until the fifth when both the Muleriders and Bison struck for two runs as each team registered a two-run home run in the frame.
- In the seventh, Oklahoma Baptist pulled to within a run, 7-6, by scoring twice in the inning. An inning later, the Bison managed to tie the game at seven-all on a RBI groundout by Kevin Olmeda.
- Now with the game knotted at seven, the Muleriders wasted little time in their half of the eight to stage their scoring threat as Josey Langston led off with a single to left field. Michael Page was then hit by a pitch and Blake Hall followed with a walk to load the bases with no outs.
- Rucker then had a lengthy at-bat that resulted in a RBI as Rucker grounded to the Bison third baseman, but he couldn't handle the chance, scoring Langston for the go-ahead run and leaving the bases loaded with no outs.
- That was the table set for Fontenot and the junior transfer cleaned it up by belting a grand slam out to right field. Richardson then came to the plate and as mentioned prior, left the yard as well as the Muleriders went back-to-back, bringing the score to its eventual final of 13-7
ON THE MOUND
- Kenneth Tabor got the start and grinded through six complete innings on the mound and left the game with a lead intact, but ended up getting the no-decision.
- George Eubanks was the first out of the bullpen for the Muleriders. In making his season debut, Eubanks pitched a complete inning and registered a strikeout
- Makenzy Larsen nailed down the final two innings of the game and earned the win, his second of the weekend and of the season. In those two innings, Larsen did not allow a hit or walk a batter while collecting one strikeout as well.
AT THE PLATE
- As a team, the Muleriders racked up 12 hits and three players had multiple hits.
- In terms of extra base hits, SAU totaled five with three home runs and a pair of doubles in the game.
- Fontenot's grand slam helped him to a team-best five RBIs in the game. Michael Davis, who homered in the game, drove in three while Rucker and Richardson each had two RBIs.
