16-game winning streak halted as No. 11 Muleriders fall to Ouachita in series opener, 5-0

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Southern Arkansas baseball team saw its lengthy 16-game winning streak come to a halt on Friday afternoon as the No.11-ranked Muleriders dropped the opening game of the series to Ouachita 5-0 on the road at Rab Rodgers Field.

The 16-game winning streak was the second-longest in Great American Conference history and the fifth-longest at SAU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game one of the series was a pitcher's duel through most of the game as the teams were gridlocked in a scoreless tie through the first five and a half innings.
  • The Muleriders had the first best chance at scoring in the game in the top of the first as they totaled three hits in the inning, but Ouachita starter John Franklin Matros used a pickoff and a strikeout to navigate the Mulerider threat without surrendering a run.
  • The Tigers threatened as well in the bottom of the first as the first two batters walked, but a lineout, a pickoff at second, and a strikeout helped SAU starter Connor Wells escape the inning.
  • Ouachita broke that scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth as they struck for three runs on two hits (their first of the game) while also benefitting from a pair of walks and a SAU error in the inning.
  • In the eighth, Ouachita increased their lead out to the eventual final of 5-0 on a two-run home run by Preston Speers.

ON THE MOUND
  • Connor Wells started the game for the Muleriders and did not allow his first hit until the sixth inning and just two for his start. But Wells did not make it out of sixth as the Tigers scored three unearned runs in that inning. Six walks also hindered the outing as Wells suffered his second loss of the season.
  • Jacob Stroder pitched the final 2.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on two hits.

AT THE PLATE
  • The Mulerider offense was limited to just five hits in the game; their second-lowest output of the season, but the hits were spread out among the lineup as the five knocks came from five different players.
  • Accounting for SAU's hits were Trevor Rucker, Mark Fontenot, Jacob Richardson, Cortland McPherson and Cory Gallegos.
  • The Muleriders were also shutout for the first time this season. It was the first time that SAU has been shutout since a 4-0 loss against Northwestern Oklahoma last year.

ON DECK
The Muleriders and Tigers will conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at Noon.
