HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first-ever meeting between SAU and A&M-Texarkana, it was A&M-Texarkana that got out to the early lead, scoring single runs in the second and third innings to lead 2-0.
- In that early going, the Muleriders were unable to get a base runner against the Eagles' starter Alec Rios as he was perfect through three innings.
- The second time through the order, however, the Muleriders got their offense jumpstarted and struck for four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
- Sparking that fourth inning scoring surge was a leadoff home run by Blake Hall to straightaway centerfield. Two batters later, Jacob Richardson hammered a two-run home run out to left-centerfield. Later in the inning, Josey Langston singled up the middle to score Cortland McPherson.
- An inning later, the Muleriders kept the offense rolling with a three-run frame to take a 7-2 lead. In that inning, SAU got RBI doubles from Mark Fontenot and McPherson. On McPherson's double, he would score as well on a throwing error by the Eagles' shortstop for the Muleriders' third run of the inning.
- In the ninth, the Muleriders added two more runs of insurance on the strength of a RBI single by Fontenot and a RBI double by Jake Tisevich.
ON THE MOUND
- Hunter Vasquez got the start for the Muleriders and the junior right-hander turned in his best outing of the season as he pitched seven complete innings with five hits scattered, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
- The final two hits against Vasquez came in his final inning and with two outs in that frame. Prior to that, A&M-Texarkana's last hit came in the third as Vasquez held the Eagles hitless through innings 4-6.
- After Vasquez, SAU threw two relievers with Pake Montgomery pitching the eighth and Makenzy Larsen in the ninth. The Eagles only managed one base runner against Montgomery and Larsen.
AT THE PLATE
- As a team, the Muleriders collected 13 base hits with six going for extra bases.
- It is the sixth-straight game in which the Muleriders have reached double-figures in hits and in each of those games SAU has had at least 12 hits.
- In reaching the 10-run mark, the Muleriders have now scored in double digits eight times this season with five of those coming in the last six games.
- Eight batters in the lineup had at least one hit with Mark Fontenot, Jacob Richardson, and Cortland McPherson notching multiple hits. McPherson paced the offense with a 3-for-4 night that included a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs.
- Fontenot and Richardson also drove in a pair of runs each with both of Richardson's scoring on two-run home run and the two for Fontenot on a RBI double and a RBI single.
ON DECK
The Muleriders will now return home for a three-game Great American Conference series against Southwestern Oklahoma. Game one of the series is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first-pitch on Friday, March 17.
