No. 20 Muleriders take pair from Bulldogs in doubleheader sweep

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – The No. 20 ranked Southern Arkansas baseball team picked up a pair of wins against Southwestern Oklahoma in a Friday evening doubleheader as the Muleriders won the opening game, 4-2, and then came back with a 6-3 win in the nightcap inside Walker Stadium at Goodheart Field.

TEAM RECORDS
Southwestern Oklahoma Bulldogs (9-13, 5-7 GAC)
#20 Southern Arkansas Muleriders (18-5, 13-1 GAC)

PITCHING DECISIONS – Game 1
W – Connor Wells (2-1)
L – Brendan Peitsmeyer (3-3)
S – Jacob Stroder (1)

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 1
  • Southwestern Oklahoma got on the scoreboard first with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the third, SAU tied the game up on a two-out solo home run off the bat of Trevor Rucker.
  • That score would hold until the top of the sixth as the two team's starting pitchers were locked in a pitcher's duel. In that top of the sixth, SWOSU picked up a RBI double from Danny-David Linahan, giving the Bulldogs a one-run lead once more, 2-1.
  • This time, the slim deficit did not last long as the Muleriders plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to flip the game in their favor, 3-2. In that inning, Cortland McPherson singled home Jacob Richardson from second and on that same play, James Trevanion scored as well on a throwing error by the Bulldogs' catcher.
  • An inning later, Rucker provided all the insurance needed in the opener with another solo home run, this one to straightaway centerfield.

ON THE MOUND – Game 1
  • Connor Wells got the start and pitched in and out of jams through his six innings of work. All told, Wells allowed six hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out three, but four walks and two hit-by-pitches kept Wells from going any longer than six innings.
  • Jacob Stroder came on in relief of Wells to begin the seventh and earned his first save of the season as he was perfect over the next and final three innings, not allowing a single base runner while striking out three.

AT THE PLATE – Game 1
  • SAU totaled 10 hits in the game and Trevor Rucker, Jacob Richardson and Cortland McPherson accounted for six of those as all three had a pair of hits.
  • Both of Rucker's hits went for extra bases as each left the ballpark in the process. The two homers for Rucker extend his team lead in the category as he now has nine on the season.
  • Those nine home runs tie Rucker for his most in a season and push his career total over 30, now standing at 31. Additionally, Rucker became just the fourth Mulerider to hit 30-plus homeruns in a career. He is now one back of recent SAU Hall of Fame inductee Tracy Geffre.

PITCHING DECISIONS – Game 2
W – Dalton Algiene (6-1)
L – Devin Ring (1-3)
S – Makenzy Larsen (1)

HOW IT HAPPENED – Game 2
  • SAU jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Bulldogs after the first two innings of play with a single tally in the first and two runs in the second. The run in the first came on a RBI groundout by Jacob Richardson, scoring Blake Hall. The runs in the second scored on a RBI by Michael Davis and single through the left side RBI from Michael Page.
  • In the top of the third, SWOSU rallied for a three runs to knot the game at three-all. The big blow that inning for the Bulldogs was a two-out, two-RBI double from Rogelio Sanchez.
  • After being retired relatively quietly in the bottom of the third, the Muleriders struck for three runs themselves in the bottom of the fourth thanks to home runs from Cortland McPherson and Blake Hall.
  • McPherson's home run led off the inning and put SAU up 4-3 while Hall's was a two-out, two-run shot that provided all the insurance runs for the Muleriders as they eventually beat the Bulldogs, 6-3.

ON THE MOUND – Game 2
  • Dalton Algiene improved to 6-1 on the season as he pitched 4.1 innings in the start. Algiene was touched up for three earned runs on eight hits, but only one of those hits was an extra base hit and he did strikeout five batters.
  • Makenzy Larsen got the call from the bullpen with one out and one on in the top of the fifth and after hitting the first batter he faced, Larsen got out of the frame unscathed. Larsen then sat the Bulldogs down in order over the next two innings as he earned his first save of the season.

AT THE PLATE – Game 2
  • The Muleriders were out-hit in the game, 8-7, but the pair of home runs in the fourth inning proved to be the difference.
  • McPherson and Hall each had two hits in the game and Michael Page joined those two in the hit column with a 2-for-2 game at the bottom of the SAU order.
