Leading Off
The Southern Arkansas baseball team is off to a 3-1 start after their four-game slate during opening weekend as part of the 2017 Air Hogs DII Classic in Grand Prairie. In that classic, the Muleriders started off 3-0 with wins over Missouri Western (5-4), Washburn (12-6) and Oklahoma Christian (6-0) before dropping a one-run contest to No. 6 Lubbock Christian (7-6).
As part of their 3-1 start to the season, first-year head coach
Justin Pettigrew collected his first career win as the Muleriders' skipper.
This weekend, the Muleriders will have their final weekend tune-up prior to Great American Conference play as they are traveling to Monticello where they will play a split doubleheader on Friday against Washburn at 11 a.m. and then Arkansas-Monticello at 2 p.m. It will be SAU's second game of the season against Washburn and the first game against UAM. The match-up with the Boll Weevils will have no bearing on the GAC standings.
Heading into the weekend, the Muleriders are hitting .323 as a team and are sporting a 3.25 team ERA. Through the first four games, the Muleriders have scored 29 runs offensively while the pitching staff already lays claim to a combined shutout.
Individually, the Muleriders have three players hitting over .400 with newcomer
Cory Gallegos leading the club at an even .500. Senior outfielder
Trevor Rucker is next in hitting at .462 and he recently garnered the year's first GAC Player of the Week honor thanks, in part, to a 1.000 slugging percentage.
A pair of starting pitchers have not surrendered a run while also limiting opponents to a sub-.240 batting average against.
