MAGNOLIA, Ark. | SAU combined for a total of 26 runs on 23 hits in a pair of high-scoring games on Saturday at the North Texas Softball Bash in Grand Prairie, Texas. In the day's action, the Lady Muleriders picked up a 14-6 victory over Texas Woman's University and then suffered a 13-12 loss in 10 innings to Lubbock Christian University to salvage a split.
Game 1 vs. Texas Woman's
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- In the first game, Southern Arkansas plated their first run in top of the second inning after a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Casada scored Megan Godoyo who drew a walk earlier in that inning.
- In the third inning, Maddie Dow sent a 2-out pitch over the right-field fence that cushioned SAU's score to 3-0.
- The Lady Mulerider offense took off in the fourth inning as they secured a comfortable 8-1 lead thanks to five runs on five hits in the frame.
- In the following inning, Dow left the yard again to put SAU in a position to run-rule with a score of 10-2.
- The Pioneers answered back in the sixth inning after plating four runs on six hits to cut the lead to 10-6, SAU.
- The Lady Mulerider bats stayed hot in the seventh as they expanded their lead to 14-6 with three runs on four hits. Marina Duran lead-off that inning with a solo blast to left field before Faith Otts banged a double to right field that scored Casada who reached base on a single up the middle. In that same inning, Jill Roye cleared the bases with two outs after sending a pitch into right field that plated SAU's final three runs.
- TWU stranded a lone runner in the bottom of the seventh that allowed SAU to claim their straight fifth win of the season with a score of 14-6.
For the Opposition :
- Pitcher Bice, took the loss in the circle for the Pioneers after she gave up eight of SAU's 14 runs along with six walks.
- TWU's offense combined for six runs on 11 hits.
- Nordie accounted for three of TWU's hits with three RBIs and one run scored.
- Puempel was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of hits and a run scored.
For SAU:
- Victoria Taylor picked up the win in the circle striking out 6 batters and only allowing two runs on six hits.
- Dow and Roye combined for 10 of SAU's 14 RBI's on five hits.
- Roye was 3-for-5 at the plate with three hits and three RBI's.
- Dow was 2-for-3 with five RBI's and a pair of homeruns.
- Duran, Casada, and Otts each registered an RBI.
Game 2 – vs. Lubbock Christian
How it Happened
- In the game against Lubbock-Christian, SAU's bats came out on fire early-on after scoring 10 runs in two innings on 11 hits.
- Back-to-back homers from Brooke Goad and Dow plated SAU's first three runs of the game in the first inning.
- A 2-RBI double to left- centerfield off of the bat of Casada gave SAU an early 5-0 lead that scored Godoyo and Roye who previously reached base on a pair of hits. A 2-run jack from Rachel Miller pushed the Lady Mulerider lead to 7-0 to close out a tremendous first inning.
- Three additional runs came in the second inning to bolster SAU's lead to 10-0. Three base-knocks from the bats of Roye, Duran, and Casada scored SAU's three runs in that inning.
- SAU would hold the Chaparrals to 10-0 until the third inning after a 2-run homer from Beuthien put LCU on the board.
- SAU remained scoreless in the next 4 innings as LCU started to breakthrough scoring two more runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the seventh to tie the score at 10-all and send the game into extra innings.
- SAU plated the go-ahead run in the eighth with a double through the left side off the bat of Dow. LCU tied the game at 11-all in the bottom of the eighth following an error in the field.
- Going into the ninth inning, an RBI single by Otts put SAU back on top with a 12-11 lead before LCU proceeded to tie the game again at 12-all on a wild pitch.
- In the 10th inning, Southern Arkansas left the score tied with no runs and no hits in their half of the inning, and LCU capitalized in the next half-inning with an RBI single from Curiel to claim the victory over SAU, 13-12.
For The Opposition:
- Monique Garcia picked up the win for LCU in the circle with nine strikeouts while only allowing two runs on three hits in eight innings pitched.
- Harley Hardison and Sydney Beuthien accounted for six of LCU's 10 RBI's.
- Addison Ard had a pair of RBI's on two hits.
- Roxy Curiel and Lindzi Clemmer each registered an RBI.
For SAU:
- Casada led the offense with three RBI's on two hits.
- Goad, Dow, and Miller each drove in a pair of runs.
- Roye, Duran, and Otts each tallied an RBI.
- SAU combined for 12 runs on 14 hits.
